UT Tyler escapes with 4-3 win over Mustangs

TYLER, Texas -- All six singles matches went three sets as No. 19-ranked Midwestern State visited No. 7-ranked UT Tyler for a dual match at Summers Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, and the Patriots pulled out a 4-3 victory.

Midwestern State falls to 10-5 this season and is 2-2 in conference play. UT Tyler extended its winning streak to six, and the Patriots are 17-4 overall with a 5-1 conference record.

With Midwestern State trailing 3-2 in the dual match, Tomas Leguizamon rallied for a 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Jordi Garcia at No. 6 singles. Leguizamon improved to 3-1 in conference play and is 5-4 overall.

UT Tyler clinched the dual-match victory with Daniil Felker holding off Matthew Earle at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Earle is 1-2 in conference matches and falls to 4-6 for the campaign.

Juan David Duque and Bruno Sanchez, the No. 35-ranked pairing in NCAA Division II, secured the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-3 win over 20th-ranked Felker and Carel Wessel at No. 1 doubles. Duque and Sanchez posted their third straight win and improved to 6-5 this season.

Germano Setti and Matthew Earle blitzed No. 28-ranked Malo Poulesquen and Artiom Dorofeev 6-1 for their 12th consecutive win at No. 2 doubles, and the No. 44-ranked duo from MSU is 13-1 in dual matches.

Samuel Antwi and Trevor Short of UT Tyler upended Jack Franklin and Jose Marquez 6-3 moments after the Mustangs won the match at No. 2 doubles. Franklin and Marquez are 1-1 at No. 3 doubles for Midwestern State.

Setti, ranked No. 18 in singles, won his third consecutive match and improved to 10-3 with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 triumph over N. 35-ranked Dorofeev at No. 1 singles.

No. 8-ranked Antwi extended his winning streak at singles to 19 matches and remained undefeated this season after surviving a challenge from No. 49-ranked Marquez at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Marquez had a three-match winning streak halted and fell to 10-4 this spring.

Duque started strong at No. 3 singles for the Mustangs, but No. 20-ranked Poulesquen rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over the senior from Colombia, who won five of his previous six singles matches. Duque is 8-6 this season.

Sanchez, ranked No. 50 in singles, was in a tightly contested match at No. 2 singles against No. 61 ranked Wessels of UT Tyler, who won the final two games of the third set to pull out a 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory. Sanchez had a three-match winning streak snapped and lost his first match against a conference foe this season. Sanchez is 9-5 in singles.

Midwestern State renews the Red River Rivalry with Cameron on Friday. First serve at Streich-Henry Tennis Complex in Lawton, Oklahoma, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
