Mustangs play host to three teams, honor seniors in final homestand

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State concludes its 2017 regular season home slate Friday and Saturday as the Mustangs play host to three teams at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs begin action Friday at 11 a.m. with a match against Collin College (Texas) before facing Seward County (Kan.) at 4 p.m. Midwestern State then hosts No. 39 Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) for Senior Day in a 9 a.m. meeting Saturday in its home finale.

SENIOR DAY
- Prior to Saturday's match versus Ouachita Baptist, the MSU men's tennis program will honor seniors Ramon Toyos and Chris Norrie 
- The duo has created one of the best classes in program history with a combined 198 career dual wins and are just one of two senior classes to have two players rank in the top 15 in career wins (2007 - Brett Emerson & Charles van Swelm)
- Toyos currently ranks eighth on the all-time wins list with 113 victories while Norrie is 15th with 85 career wins
- The pair has also led the Mustangs to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances including Elite Eight showings in 2014 and 2016

LAST TIME OUT
- Midwestern State tallied its seventh win over a nationally-ranked team Friday with a 7-2 win over No. 30 St. Edward's at the MSU Tennis Center
- The Mustangs claimed all three doubles matches while earning straight-set wins on three courts in the victory
 
MSU TOPS INITIAL SET OF NCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS
- Following three-straight No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament, Midwestern State was in familiar territory appearing at No. 1 in the first set of South Central Region rankings released by the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Committee Wednesday
- MSU was joined by St. Mary's (Texas), Western New Mexico, Cameron and Metro State (Colo.) in the top five
- The top four teams from the South Central Region will advance to the NCAA Tournament with the top two teams serving as hosts for opening round action Apr. 29-30 at their campus site
- Two teams from each of the eight regions will advance to the NCAA Championship site to vie for a national title, May 9-12, at the Sanlando Park Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
 
MUSTANGS SLIP TO 21ST IN LATEST NATIONAL RANKINGS
- Despite four wins over top-25 opponents through the first 12 matches of the season, Midwestern State dropped out of the top 20 in the national rankings for the first time since Mar. 2013 two weeks ago, falling six spots to No. 21 in the Oracle/ITA poll
 
TOYOS REACHES 100 CAREER WINS
- Senior Ramon Toyos became the 11th Mustang in program history to reach 100 career dual wins on March 3 following a 6-2, 6-0 win over Northwest Missouri State's No. 38 Roman Boissinot
- The Torrelavega, Spain native carries a 57-24 career singles record and 56-29 doubles mark for a combined dual record of 113-53 (.681) for eighth on the all-time wins list
- Toyos followed former teammates Kacper Boborykin (2015) and Kyle Davidson (2016) to reach 100 wins with the Mustangs placing a player in the 100-win club for the third-straight season
- Jason Peters set the school record for career dual wins with 144 victories from 1998 to 2001
- Peters is followed by Michael Mills (137), Brett Emerson (133), Zac Dillard (131), Ryan Gillen (127), Kyle Davidson (124), Brian Holcomb (117), Toyos, Victor Vidal (108), Kacper Boborykin (102) and Charles van Swelm (101)

A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State enters the weekend with a 10-5 season record including a 7-4 mark against top-50 teams this season
- Ramon Toyos ranks ninth in the nation and first in the region in singles with an 8-5 record at No. 1, recording seven wins over regionally-ranked opponents and a pair of nationally-ranked wins
- Dylan Hall comes in having won five-straight matches to lead the Mustangs with a 10-4 dual record at No. 4 and rank 18th in the region
- Angel Palacios is 9-6 playing on court two for MSU with six wins over regionally-ranked opponents for 14th in the regional rankings
Dillon Pineda matches Hall for a team-best five-match win streak playing at No. 6 with a 6-5 record on the season
- Toyos and Pineda have teamed up for a 6-1 mark at No. 1 doubles with five-straight wins, ranking as high as ninth in the country this season
- On court two, the duo of Hall and Palacios have also won five in a row for a 6-1 record

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
- Collin College comes in with a 9-7 record, ranking 11th in the Oracle/ITA NJCAA poll and fifth in Region II
- Daniel Stormon ranks 30th in the nation in singles with a 7-9 record at No. 1
- In doubles, Stormon and Akinori Wada sport a 6-4 mark at No. 1 to rank 16th nationally
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State is 7-3 against Collin College in the all-time series having won the last seven meetings
- The Mustangs posted an 8-1 win over the Cougars last season in Wichita Falls and are 3-0 at home against Collin
- The Cougars earned wins over MSU in 1997, 2003 and 2004
 
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
- Seward County has compiled a 17-4 record and totaled six wins over NCAA Division II teams to rank fourth in the Oracle/ITA NJCAA poll and first in Region III
- Carlos Anez is fifth in the nation with a 9-7 record at the top singles position to lead four Saints in the national rankings
- Ondrej Nice ranks 11th with a 9-3 mark at No. 3 singles while Przemek Zielinski is 23rd nationally with an 11-6 record playing primarily at No. 4
- Duro Opacic rounds out the nationally-ranked players for Seward with a 12-4 record at No. 2 singles
- Anez and Nice have posted a 13-1 mark at No. 1 doubles to top the NJCAA rankings
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State carries a perfect 3-0 record against Seward County, renewing the series last season after 21 years
- MSU posted a 6-1 victory in 2016 to improve to 3-0 at home against the Saints 
- The Mustangs also tallied wins in 1991 and 1995
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
- Ouachita Baptist is 4-8 on the season, ranking 39th nationally and sixth in the Central Region
- The Tigers are led by Lennart Lonneman who ranks seventh in the region playing at No. 1 while Juan Moncada comes in at 16th playing at positions two and three
- Moncada and Luis Chab appear at No. 4 in the region in doubles
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Ouachita Baptist leads the all-time series 10-2 over Midwestern State
- The Mustangs have claimed the last two matchups with wins in 2015 and 2016
- The Tigers earned wins over MSU from 1996-2007 with six wins coming at home
- MSU is 2-1 against OBU in Wichita Falls with its lone loss coming in 2000
