Mustangs meet rival Cameron Saturday in NCAA opening round

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State is set to make its fifth-straight and 15th overall postseason appearance Saturday as the No. 3 seed Mustangs square off against rival and second-seeded Cameron for the third time in less than three weeks in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex in Lawton, Okla.
 
The Mustangs and Aggies comprise half of the South Central Region bracket with two teams advancing to the round of 16 at the Sanlando Park Tennis Center, May 9-12, in Altamonte Springs, Fla. On the other side of the bracket, top-seeded St. Mary's (Texas) plays host to Western New Mexico in a 10 a.m. matchup Saturday in San Antonio.
 
MSU IN THE POSTSEASON
- Midwestern State is making its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017, totaling an 18-14 record in the postseason since becoming a Division II member in 1997-98
- The Mustangs have advanced to the NCAA Championship site seven times in program history with trips in 1999, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2013, 2014 and 2016
- Midwestern State has appeared in the Elite Eight in three of the last four seasons and has four showings overall in the national quarterfinals in 2006, 2013, 2014 and 2016
- MSU is 14-7 in 14 regional appearances and carries a 5-2 mark against Cameron in the postseason, last squaring off in 2015 in Wichita Falls
- In 2016, Midwestern defeated St. Edward's (Texas) 5-1 in the NCAA South Central Region #1 Championship at the MSU Tennis Center to advance to nationals
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State comes into Saturday's matchup with Cameron with a 27-23 advantage in the all-time series
- The Aggies have claimed both matchups this season with a 6-3 victory on Apr. 11 in Lawton while defeating MSU 5-4 in the LSC Championship last Saturday in Arlington
- This will be the sixth time and first since 2005 that the two teams have met three times in a single season
- Cameron holds a 12-6 edge in matches played in Lawton with MSU last defeating the Aggies in Oklahoma on Apr. 20, 2015
 
FOUR MUSTANGS COLLECT ALL-LSC HONORS
- Midwestern State earned five All-Lone Star Conference honors from the league office Thursday with Angel Palacios, Dillon Pineda and head coach Scott Linn earning individual accolades
- Palacios was tabbed LSC Freshman of the Year while collecting All-LSC Singles honors and an honorable mention doubles nod
- Pineda garnered LSC Sportsmanship Player of the Year accolades while earning a spot with Ramon Toyos on the All-LSC Doubles team
- Toyos joined Palacios on the All-LSC Singles team while Dylan Hall was an honorable mention singles and doubles honoree
- Also being named LSC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year, Linn took home his first career LSC men's coaching honor
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State enters the postseason with a 14-10 record after claiming runner-up honors at the LSC Championship last weekend
- Ranked 25th in this week's national rankings, the Mustangs are 9-7 against top-50 teams this season including four wins over top-25 programs
- Ramon Toyos carries a 12-8 record at No. 1 singles to rank 30th in the nation with 10 victories over regionally-ranked players and a pair of wins over nationally-ranked foes
- At No. 2, Angel Palacios is 13-10 with seven of his wins coming against the region's top 20 players to rank 13th in the South Central Region
- Dylan Hall also cracks the top 20 in the region at No. 19 with a 12-10 mark playing courts three and four for MSU this season
- Dillon Pineda is 7-3 in his last 10 matches for a 12-8 record on the year, while Chris Norrie is 9-1 in his last 10 with a team-best four-match win streak and 16-8 mark at the bottom of the lineup
- In doubles, Toyos and Pineda jumped to 13th nationally in the latest rankings with an 11-5 record at No .1 including six wins over the region's top-10 duos and three wins over nationally-ranked tandems
- Palacios and Hall team up to form the region's 10th-ranked doubles pair with a 9-7 record at No. 2 while the duo of Chris and Denney Norrie are 8-8 on court three

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
- Cameron comes in winners of its last five matches for a 16-10 record and No. 21 national ranking
- Vinicius Santos, the LSC Player of the Year, is ranked 29th in the country having won his last five matches for a 16-6 record at No. 1 this season
- On court two, Bruno Babic sports a 13-9 mark to rank 10th in the region while Felipe Oyarzun has won four matches in a row for a 12-12 record playing court three
- Mateo Velasco comes in with a 15-8 record on court four while Julen Gutierrez adds a 14-10 slate at No. 5 singles
- Oyarzun and Velasco rank 11th nationally in doubles with a 19-7 record at the top position
- Babic and Keiran President have won five straight for a 6-4 mark at No. 2 while Gutierrez and Santos are 15-4 at line three
