Mustangs begin road swing against No. 25 Cameron, Abilene Christian

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State begins a five-match road swing Tuesday against its long-time rival No. 25 Cameron in the team's Lone Star Conference opener before a Wednesday meeting with Division I Abilene Christian.

The Mustangs and Aggies square off in a 2 p.m. contest Tuesday at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex in Lawton, Okla. in a battle of two of the region's NCAA contenders. MSU then travels south for a 5 p.m. matchup Wednesday against its former conference rival ACU at the Eager Tennis Center in Abilene.

LAST TIME OUT
- Midwestern State closed out its regular season home slate with a 2-1 record last weekend while honoring seniors Ramon Toyos and Chris Norrie in their final regular season home matches of their successful four-year careers
- The Mustangs finished 7-1 at home with wins over Collin College (Texas) and No. 39 Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) while suffering its lone setback against Seward County (Kan.), 5-4
 
MSU TOPS INITIAL SET OF NCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS
- Following three-straight No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament, Midwestern State was in familiar territory appearing at No. 1 in the first set of South Central Region rankings released by the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Committee Wednesday
- MSU was joined by St. Mary's (Texas), Western New Mexico, Cameron and Metro State (Colo.) in the top five
- The top four teams from the South Central Region will advance to the NCAA Tournament with the top two teams serving as hosts for opening round action Apr. 29-30 at their campus site
- Two teams from each of the eight regions will advance to the NCAA Championship site to vie for a national title, May 9-12, at the Sanlando Park Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
 
MUSTANGS SLIP TO 21ST IN LATEST NATIONAL RANKINGS
- Despite four wins over top-25 opponents through the first 12 matches of the season, Midwestern State dropped out of the top 20 in the national rankings for the first time since Mar. 2013 three weeks ago, falling six spots to No. 21 in the Oracle/ITA poll
 
TOYOS REACHES 100 CAREER WINS
- Ramon Toyos became the 11th Mustang in program history to reach 100 career dual wins on March 3 following a 6-2, 6-0 win over Northwest Missouri State's No. 38 Roman Boissinot
- The Torrelavega, Spain native carries a 59-24 career singles record and 58-30 doubles mark for a combined dual record of 117-54 (.684) to tie for seventh on the all-time wins list
- Toyos followed former teammates Kacper Boborykin (2015) and Kyle Davidson (2016) to reach 100 wins with the Mustangs placing a player in the 100-win club for the third-straight season
- Jason Peters set the school record for career dual wins with 144 victories from 1998 to 2001
- Peters is followed by Michael Mills (137), Brett Emerson (133), Zac Dillard (131), Ryan Gillen (127), Kyle Davidson (124), Brian Holcomb and Toyos (117), Victor Vidal (108), Kacper Boborykin (102) and Charles van Swelm (101)

A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State has compiled a 12-6 record including an 8-4 mark against top-50 teams on the season
- Ramon Toyos ranks ninth nationally and first in the South Central Region in singles with a 10-5 record at No. 1, recording eight wins over regionally-ranked opponents and two nationally-ranked victories on his resume
- Angel Palacios enters the week having won six-straight matches to lead MSU with a 12-6 record playing No. 2 singles, totaling six wins over regionally-ranked foes for 14th in the regional rankings
- Dylan Hall ranks 18th in the region carrying an 11-6 record playing No. 4 for the Mustangs this season
- Chris Norrie adds a five-match win streak for the Mustangs with an 11-7 mark on court five
- In doubles, Toyos and Pineda have teamed up for an 8-2 record at the top position with three wins over regionally-ranked tandems
- On court two, the duo of Hall and Palacios are also 8-2 while Chris and Denney Norrie have tallied a 5-5 mark at No. 3
 
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
- Cameron enters the week with an 11-10 record, ranking 25th in the Oracle/ITA Division II poll and third in the first set of NCAA South Central Region rankings released last week
- Vinicius Santos ranks 50th in the national singles rankings and third in the region with a 12-6 record at No. 1 to lead Cameron
- At No. 2 singles, Bruno Babic ranks 11th in the region also with a 12-6 mark
- Felipe Oyarzun and Mateo Velasco rank 13th nationally and second in the region with a 17-4 record at No. 1 doubles
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State is 27-21 against Cameron since the series began in 1979
- The Mustangs have won four of the last five meetings since the 2013 season
- Cameron is 11-6 against MSU in Lawton but the Mustangs have claimed two of last three matchups since 2011
 
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
- Abilene Christian comes in with a 14-9 record including a 2-0 mark against Division II teams, having won six of its last seven matches
- Josh Sheehy carries a 13-7 mark playing No. 1 singles to lead the Wildcats in wins
- Hunter Holman matches Sheehy in wins with a 13-8 record on courts four and five this season
- In doubles, Henry Adams and Nico Agritelley are 9-7 at No. 1 to lead ACU
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Abilene Christian leads the all-time series against Midwestern State, 26-14
- The Mustangs snapped an eight-match losing skid with two wins in 2013 before a 5-2 setback last season in Abilene
- ACU is 15-5 against MSU in Abilene
