Mustangs set to host in-region foe Metro State Tuesday

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State returns to the MSU Tennis Center for the first time in two weeks Tuesday with an in-region matchup against Metro State (Colo.) out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
- Midwestern State competed in four matches over spring break in Georgia and Florida, posting a 2-2 record with matches against three top-15 teams in the country
- The Mustangs defeated Abraham Baldwin (Ga.) 7-2, ranked fourth in the NJCAA, while posting a dominant 7-2 upset of No. 11 Georgia College
- MSU was swept by No. 5 Valdosta State (Ga.) and No. 9 West Florida in road matches with all of its five losses coming to four top-20 teams and Division I TCU this season
 
TOYOS REACHES 100 CAREER WINS
- Senior Ramon Toyos became the 11th Mustang in program history to reach 100 career dual wins on March 3 following a 6-2, 6-0 win over Northwest Missouri State's No. 38 Roman Boissinot
- The Torrelavega, Spain native carries a 55-23 career singles record and 52-29 doubles mark for a combined dual record of 107-52 (.673) to sit in ninth on the all-time wins list
- Toyos followed former teammates Kacper Boborykin (2015) and Kyle Davidson (2016) to reach 100 wins with the Mustangs placing a player in the 100-win club for the third-straight season
- Jason Peters set the school record for career dual wins with 144 victories from 1998 to 2001
- Peters is followed by Michael Mills (137), Brett Emerson (133), Zac Dillard (131), Ryan Gillen (127), Kyle Davidson (124), Brian Holcomb (117), Victor Vidal (108), Toyos, Kacper Boborykin (102) and Charles van Swelm (101)
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State comes into the week with a 6-5 record with four wins over top-25 teams this season
- The Mustangs have pushed through a challenging slate in the first half of the season with eight matches against top-25 programs
- MSU is currently ranked 15th in the Oracle/ITA Division II rankings and continues to sit atop the South Central Region poll
- Senior Ramon Toyos, ranked fifth nationally and first in the region, is 6-4 at the top singles position with five wins over regionally-ranked players and a pair of nationally-ranked victories
- Freshman Angel Palacios and sophomore Dylan Hall have also posted six wins in singles to tie for the team lead and earn regional rankings of 14th and 18th, respectively
- Toyos and Hall also lead the Mustangs with six wins in doubles play, compiling a 4-4 record at No. 1 to rank third in the region
 
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
- Metro State enters Tuesday's match with a 6-3 overall record and 3-0 mark in the RMAC after three-straight conference road wins over Colorado Mesa, Colorado Christian and CSU-Pueblo
- The Roadrunners climbed to seventh in the latest Oracle/ITA South Central Region rankings last week
- Metro State sports three top-20 singles players in the region in No. 5 Josh Graetz, No. 12 Joey Tscherne and No. 20 Alejandro Martinez-Morilla along with the fifth-ranked doubles team of Graetz and Tscherne
- Graetz has compiled a 7-2 record playing at No. 1 this season while Tscherne is 6-3 at No. 2 to lead the Roadrunners in wins
- In doubles, Graetz and Tscherne remain unbeaten at 9-0 on the season at No. 1 while Calum Hayes and Martinez-Morilla have posted a 6-3 record playing on court three
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State carries a perfect 8-0 record against Metro State in the all-time series since 2000
- The Mustangs have posted three-straight 9-0 sweeps, last meeting a season ago in Denver, Colo.
- MSU is 3-0 versus the Roadrunners at the MSU Tennis Center with wins in 2002, 2008 and 2014
 
LOOKING AHEAD
- Midwestern State travels to Shawnee, Okla., Saturday to face host Oklahoma Baptist at 10 a.m. before a 3 p.m. neutral match against Newman (Kan.) at the OBU Tennis Courts
