Mustangs open up LSC play Wednesday at Tarleton State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The 20th-ranked Midwestern State women's tennis team will face their first Lone Star Conference opponent of the 2016 season Wednesday when the Mustangs face Tarleton State in a 2 p.m. matchup at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts in Stephenville.
 
LAST TIME OUT
– Midwestern State split a pair of matches Saturday at the Arlington Tennis Center, falling 5-2 to No. 12 St. Mary's before responding with an 8-1 victory over No. 47 Dallas Baptist
– Senior Maddie Schorlemmer posted a 4-0 record on the weekend including a straight set singles win over No. 44 Jamie Lee Denton of St. Mary's, 6-2, 6-2
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
– Midwestern State enters the week with an 11-5 record on the season and 9-3 mark against NCAA Division II opponents
– Senior Maddie Schorlemmer climbed to No. 27 in the new set of national singles rankings on Mar. 23, sporting a 10-5 dual play record with a 9-4 mark at No. 1 this season
– Schorlemmer enters Wednesday's match with Tarleton State needing just one win to become the eighth player in MSU women's tennis history to reach 100 career wins
– The Argyle native is 99-34 for her career and could join teammate Lauren Pineda as players to reach the 100-win plateau this season
– The duo of senior Lindsay Nochowicz and freshman Eirini Kontaki also appeared in the national rankings, moving in at No. 23 in doubles and third in the region with a 9-5 record on the year
– Senior Lauren Pineda leads the Mustangs with an 11-2 record in singles while teaming up with sophomore Amy Clifton to rank sixth in the region as MSU's No. 2 doubles team with a 13-2 mark
– Freshman Greta Lazzarotto, ranked 14th in the South Central Region, is 10-6 on the season in singles, primarily appearing on courts two and three
– Schorlemmer and Lazzarotto round out the doubles lineup for the Mustangs, having won seven-straight matches to carry a team-best 14-2 record
– Kontaki, ranked 17th in the region, carries an 8-6 record on courts two and three this season
– Pineda has been solid for the Mustangs at the No. 4 line, posting a 7-2 record at that position
– Junior Abby White is 4-0 at No. 5 and 5-1 at No. 6 on the season while Nochowicz is 8-2 overall with a 4-2 record at No. 5
 
SCOUTING THE TEXANNS
– Tarleton State comes in with a 12-4 record and 0-1 mark in the Lone Star Conference
– The TexAnns have won three-straight contests, all coming over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes
– Ashleigh Elward is 12-4 on the season with a 9-4 slate at the No. 1 singles position to rank 10th in the South Central Region
– Erika Richarme leads the TexAnns in wins on the season with a 13-3 record and ranks 13th in the region while competing at Nos. 1 and 2
– Elward and Richarme have also teamed up to post a 13-3 mark in doubles play at No. 2 while Luiza Ferraro-Adas and Elena Preadca are 11-5 competing at the top position to come in seventh in the regional rankings
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State and Tarleton State will square off for the 32nd time Wednesday with the Mustangs leading the all-time series, 18-13, since it began in 1988
– The Mustangs have won six in a row over the TexAnns including a 5-0 victory in the Lone Star Conference semifinals last season in Lawton, Okla.
– Tarleton holds a 6-4 advantage in matches played in Stephenville but dropped the last meeting to the Mustangs in Apr. 2014, 8-1

MUSTANGS JUMP TO NO. 20 IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
– Midwestern State climbed two spots to No. 20 in the Oracle/ITA Women's Division II national rankings released Mar. 23 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
– The Mustangs also stayed at No. 3 in the latest South Central Region rankings released on Mar. 16, coming in behind No. 12 St. Mary's and No. 17 Cameron
 
PINEDA CAPTURES 100TH CAREER WIN
Lauren Pineda became the seventh Mustang in program history to earn career win No. 100 after a pair of victories over Colorado Mesa on Mar. 13
– Pineda climbed into sole possession of fifth on the all-time wins list last weekend following two wins over Dallas Baptist 
– The Allen native currently sits with a 112-41 career record (.732) with a 67-25 doubles mark and 45-16 singles record to rank fourth on the doubles wins list and eighth in singles
– Lacey Wuthrich is the all-time wins leader at MSU, compiling a 138-44 record from 2002-05
– Wuthrich is followed by Emilee Black (135-47) and Brooke Gray (131-64), who both played for Midwestern State from 2000-03, and Sara Butler (129-27), who set the school record for winning percentage (.827) from 1999-2002
– Rounding out the 100-win club is Marsha Meyer (111-79), who suited up for the then-Lady Indians from 1998-2001, and Taylor Coffman (100-72), who played from 2012-15
 
LINN EARNS WIN NO. 400
– Head coach Scott Linn received a memorable win No. 400 last May when the MSU women's tennis team upset No. 12 California (Pa.) in the NCAA Sweet 16
– Linn enters his sixth season leading the MSU men's and women's tennis programs, guiding the Mustangs to a combined seven postseason appearances since taking over the programs in 2010-11
– Linn has posted an 88-40 record (.688) with the men's team while recording an 94-45 mark (.676) with the women for a combined 182-85 (.682)
– Since 1997-98, Linn has compiled a 421-264 (.615) career record in 15 seasons as a men's head coach (230-150, .605) and 12 seasons as a women's coach (191-114, .626), averaging close to 15 wins a season
– Prior to MSU, Linn served head coaching stints at Science & Arts. (Okla.), Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and Florida Southern while serving as a men's assistant coach at his alma mater, East Central (Okla.), and Indiana
 
LOOKING AHEAD
– Midwestern State will host Collin College (Texas) and Seward County (Kan.) Friday at the MSU Tennis Center, taking on Collin at 10 a.m. before wrapping up the day against Seward County at 3 p.m.
