Mustangs host No. 12 Cameron in South Central Region showdown

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – In a rematch of the 2015 NCAA South Central Region Championship, the 11th-ranked Midwestern State men's tennis team once again plays host to No. 12 Cameron in a matchup of the top two teams in the region Wednesday at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
– Midwestern State suffered its fourth loss in the last five matches Monday with a 6-3 setback to No. 24 Southeastern Oklahoma State at the MSU Tennis Center
– The Savage Storm took two of three doubles matches including a 9-7 victory at No. 3 before adding a pair of straight-set wins at No. 3 and 4 singles to stretch their lead to 4-1
– Junior Ramon Toyos snapped the SOSU win streak with a 6-1, 6-4 victory on court two before No. 45 Max Fil recorded the clincher at No. 1 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over 44th-ranked Kyle Davidson
– Freshman Dylan Hall also picked up a singles win on the day for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 6
 
MUSTANGS COME IN SECOND IN FIRST SET OF NCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS
– Midwestern State appeared at No. 2 in the first set of South Central Regional rankings released by the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Committee Wednesday
– The Mustangs came in behind rival Cameron and in front of St. Mary's (Texas), Western New Mexico and St. Edward's in the regional poll
– The top four teams in the region will qualify for the NCAA postseason with the regional tournament taking place May 7-10 at select campus sites
– The top two teams out of the South Central Region will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 18-21, at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver, Colo.
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
– Midwestern State is 13-8 overall with a 9-4 mark against NCAA Division II opponents for a No. 11 national ranking in the Oracle/ITA Divsion II poll
– Senior Kyle Davidson is ranked 44th in the national singles rankings with three wins over nationally-ranked opponents for an 8-9 record at the No. 1 position
– Davidson and Toyos, who sports an 11-8 record as the No. 2 singles player for MSU, pair up as the 19th-ranked doubles team in the country with a 13-6 record at the top position this season
– Junior Chris Norrie has climbed to the No. 3 position for MSU, carrying an 11-7 mark on the season  
– Freshman Dillon Pineda has put together a solid first season with the Mustangs, compiling a team-best 13-5 record while making the move up to the No. 4 line
– Neander and fellow freshmen Radu Popa and Dylan Hall have made up the bottom of the lineup for the Mustangs this season
– Popa is 8-8 on the year with a 3-1 record at No. 4 while Neander is 9-6 overall with a 5-3 mark at No. 6 singles
– Hall sports a 7-5 record with a 2-3 slate at No. 5 and 2-1 record at No. 6  
– In doubles, Pineda and senior Zack Santagate have posted a 12-8 mark as the No. 2 doubles team while Norrie and Popa are 12-6 at No. 3

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
– Cameron enters the final week of the regular season with a 15-4 record to rank 12th in the Oracle/ITA Division II rankings
– The Aggies have recorded seven wins over nationally-ranked teams this season
– Dennis Merdan is 7-11 on the year at No. 1 singles to rank sixth in the South Central Region
– Joao Fazendeiro sports a 13-3 record as the No. 2 singles player for Cameron to earn a No. 7 ranking in the region
– Vinicius Santos ranks ninth in the region with an 11-5 record at No. 3 singles while Felipe Oyarzun is 13-5 at No. 4 to rank 18th
– The duo of Oyarzun and Mateo Velasco top the regional poll in doubles with a 7-8 record with a pair of wins over nationally-ranked teams while Santos and Bruno Babic are seventh in the rankings with an 8-3 record as the No. 2 team for the Aggies
– Head coach James Helvey is in his 21st season with the Cameron men's tennis program, leading the Aggies to 18 NCAA Tournaments
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Wednesday's matchup will mark the 48th meeting between Midwestern State and Cameron with the Mustangs holding a 26-21 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 1979
– The Mustangs are 11-5 against the Aggies at the MSU Tennis Center
– The teams split the series last season with MSU earning a 6-3 win in Lawton before the No. 29 Aggies upset the 12th-ranked Mustangs with a 5-3 decision in the NCAA South Central Region Championship at the MSU Tennis Center two weeks later 

MUSTANGS CLIMB TO PROGRAM-BEST 11TH IN ORACLE/ITA NATIONAL POLL
– Midwestern State continued to rewrite the program record books last month when the Mustangs earned their highest team ranking in school history at No. 11 in the Oracle/ITA Men's Division II National Poll, released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
– The Mustangs moved up one spot after coming in 12th in the first set of spring rankings on Feb. 24, which matched their previous program-best ranking that was set on Apr. 30, 2015
– Midwestern also remained atop the South Central Region rankings released on Mar. 16, coming in front of No. 12 Cameron, No. 27 St. Mary's, No. 28 Western New Mexico and No. 33 St. Edward's

DAVIDSON EARNS 100TH CAREER WIN
Kyle Davidson became the 10th Mustang in MSU men's tennis history to reach the 100-win plateau following a doubles win over Texas-Permian Basin on Mar. 11
– Davidson is currently seventh on the all-time wins list at Midwestern State, entering the week with a career record of 116-67 (.634)
– Davidson ranks sixth on the doubles wins list with a 65-30 record and ninth in singles with a 51-37 mark
– Jason Peters is the MSU all-time wins leader with 144 victories from 1998-2001, and is followed by Michael Mills (137), Brett Emerson (133), Zac Dillard (131), Ryan Gillen (127), Brian Holcomb (117), Davidson (116), Victor Vidal (108), Kacper Boborykin (102) and Charles van Swelm (101)

LINN EARNS WIN NO. 400
– Head coach Scott Linn received a memorable win No. 400 last May when the MSU women's tennis team upset No. 12 California (Pa.) in the NCAA Sweet 16
– Linn enters his sixth season leading the MSU men's and women's tennis programs, guiding the Mustangs to a combined seven postseason appearances since taking over the programs in 2010-11
– Linn has posted a 91-44 record (.674) with the men's team while recording a 99-47 mark (.678) with the women for a combined 190-91 (.676)
– Since 1997-98, Linn has compiled a 429-270 (.614) career record in 15 seasons as a men's head coach (233-154, .602) and 12 seasons as a women's coach (196-116, .628), averaging close to 15 wins a season
– Prior to MSU, Linn served head coaching stints at Science & Arts. (Okla.), Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and Florida Southern while serving as a men's assistant coach at his alma mater, East Central (Okla.), and Indiana
 
LOOKING AHEAD
– Midwestern State closes out the regular season Friday at the MSU Tennis Center when the Mustangs host Arkansas-Fort Smith for Senior Day at 2 p.m.
– Prior to the match, the men's tennis program will recognize seniors Kyle Davidson and Zack Santagate
