WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Head coach
Scott Linn and the Midwestern State men's tennis program announced their first signee in the 2017 signing class Tuesday afternoon in Kansas native
Yaswanth Mylavarapu.
Ranked fifth in the state of Kansas, Mylavarapu is a three-time all-state selection playing for Theodore Fabiano at Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park. The Leawood native claimed first team all-state honors the last two seasons, helping the Huskies to a pair of Class 6A state championships.
A three-year team captain, Mylavarapu was a fourth-place singles finisher at state in 2016 while taking fifth place as a sophomore in 2015. The 5-10 right-hander earned second team all-state honors as a freshman in 2014, finishing third in doubles play.
Mylavarapu has also trained under coach Eric Rand at Kansas City United Tennis, a premier college prep tennis academy located in Kansas City, Mo.
"We are excited to have Yash Mylavarapu join our men's tennis program at Midwestern State University," Linn said. "He has come from a state championship tennis program at Blue Valley Northwest as well as an excellent junior program at KCUT directed by Eric Rand. Yash is an outstanding ball striker who sees the game very well in match play. He is also a very thoughtful and engaging young man on and off the court. We look forward to the impact he will have in our program at MSU."
Mylavarapu is the son of Raghuram and Nagavalli Mylavarapu and has one sister, Sreelasya. He plans to major in Pre-Med at Midwestern State.
The Mustangs are coming off one of their best seasons in program history in 2016, advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the fourth time in school history. Midwestern State comes into the 2017 season ranked 15th in the nation following a 17-9 campaign a season ago.
