STILLWATER, Okla. - Brissia Montalvo blistered the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree 5K course in a time of 18:52.93 Saturday morning to lead No. 14 Midwestern State to a college division title.
The time was the best ever for a Mustang runner at the 74-year-old event and good enough for a third-place individual finish while
Sydnee Cole (19:17.42/8th),
Ashley Flores (19:21.46/10th) and
Janel Campbell (19:24.86/11th) finished as a pack to give MSU four for the top 11 finishers.
"We had some great individual performances today," MSU coach
Koby Styles said. "We didn't run as well as a whole and our gap time expanded. It's a hard course, but that shouldn't matter. It was good to get the win though."
Last week, forty-five seconds separated the first and fifth across the finish line, but Saturday the Mustangs' final counter -- sophomore
Heather Owens (20:11.86/34th) -- completed the course 80 seconds behind Montalvo, who bettered Cole's mark last year at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree by 8 seconds.
"This was our second hilly course in a row, but now we will have some time to get back to the basics and concentrate on conference and regionals," Styles said. "We are the hunted team now, so we have to be ready."
MSU will enjoy an idle week before competing in the ACU Naimadu Classic on Oct. 9.
Other Mustangs' competitors included freshman
Cara Mack (20:12.70/35th), sophomore
Melody Caldwell (20:41.05/58th) and senior
Bailey Dulaney (21:34.41/106th).
