PORTALES, N.M. - Midwestern State coach
Grant McCasland knew the key to Saturday night's Lone Star Conference South Division contest against Eastern New Mexico.
"Looking at stats for the season, when they make the 3s they win, and when they don't, they lose," he said.
The Greyhounds erupted to hit 6-of-12 shots from the arc in the second half to erase a 16-point first half lead, but the Mustangs put the game away with an 11-2 run late in the second half and held on for a 66-59 win at Greyhound Arena.
"We did a great job of guarding them and really stifled their sets," McCasland said. "They made some really tough 3s, so give them credit for making some really tough shots."
Eastern New Mexico's Reggie Nelson hit consecutive treys to key a 20-8 run in the opening minutes of the second half as the Greyhounds knotted the game at 36-36 on Nelson's traditional three-point play with 14:29 to play.
But junior guard
Chris Hagan, who paced MSU with 15 points, hit a pair of runners and
Charlie Logan slammed in an alley-oop dunk to ignite a 10-3 run as the Mustangs pushed the lead back to 48-41 when
Craig Green put back
Adrian Van Buren missed 3-pointer with 12:03 to go.
Eastern New Mexico cut the advantage back to 3 before Logan started the decisive run with his third dunk of the game with 7:55 to play.
Senior guard
Jason Ebie had 12 points and five steals in 33 minutes, while
Rashad Austin scored 11 points off the bench before fouling out in 15 minutes.
Green added nine points and had four steals.
Jimmie Marshall paced Eastern New Mexico with 16 points while Neslon and Tyler Jefferson added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Midwestern State, which improved to 16-1 and 2-1 in the LSC South, plays host to Northeastern State in a Lone Star Conference crossover game Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Greyhounds fell to 7-11 and 2-2.
