DURANT, Okla. – Becca Wessels scored the lone run in the ninth inning to give Midwestern State a 1-0 win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference Crossover at Multi-Sports Complex.
Wessels, who had come on as a pinch runner for
Lauren Craig in the second frame of the international tiebreaker, scored when
Ashley Kuchenski reached on a throwing error by ENMU shortstop Casandra McCommons with two outs in the inning.
The run made a winner of
Katie Petersen, who delivered her sixth shutout of the season to improve to 17-4. The sophomore pitcher from Plano allowed three hits while striking four and walking one in nine innings.
The win snapped MSU's three-game skid at the crossover and improved the Mustangs to 24-15, while Eastern New Mexico fell to 17-20.
Wessels was placed on second base according international tiebreaker rules in the ninth inning and advanced to third on an illegal pitch.
Tabitha Yannetti followed with a sinking liner to left field that was hauled in by the Zias' Jessica Pacheco.
Amanda Potysman followed with a safety squeeze attempt that was fielded by ENMU third baseman Nikki Darnell, who held Wessels at third before firing a strike across the diamond to retire Potysman at first.
Kuchenski then grounded an 0-1 offering to McCommons, whose throw pulled the first baseman off the bag allowing Wessels to score the winning run.
The run spoiled a brilliant performance by ENMU starter Kristen Cruickshank who limited the Mustangs to seven hits while striking out one and walking one in 8 2/3 innings.
Cruickshank has now hurled 15 2/3 scoreless innings this season against the Mustangs as she also dealt them a 1-0 shutout on Feb. 2 at the St. Mary's Division II Classic in San Antonio.
