Flores wins at Joe Davies Invitational, falls short of provisional

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The flu bug reared its head at the entirely wrong time for Midwestern State senior Ashley Flores as she took aim at an NCAA Division II provision qualifying time Saturday at the Joe Davies Invitational.

She managed to win the mile run run, but a time of 5:15.14 fell just shy of the 5:05.50 even after adjustments for elevation.

"That just hows the fight she has," MSU coach Koby Styles said. "To not feel well with the bug that she has, but she still wanted to compete and win at a collegiate meet. I'm definitely happy and proud of her for the she competed."

The was the fifth best in program history and fourth best for Flores, who ran a personal best time of 5:04.66 last season at the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational.

She gets another shot at making a qualifying run next week at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships in the Texas Tech Athletic Training Center also known as "The Bubble."

"She's ready for next weekend to compete in front of her teammates," Styles said. "Competing well at the conference meet is what is important to her."
