Gonzales scores, Mustangs shut out Comets at UTD Soccer Complex

RICHARDSON, Texas — Midwestern State defeated UT Dallas 1-0 on Saturday night at UTD Soccer Complex. Lexi Gonzales scored the match's only goal at 84:30 off an assist from McKynzi Hailey.

Midwestern State (8-0-0, 4-0-0) has not conceded a goal during its eight-game winning streak to start the season. UT Dallas put only one of its seven shots on goal. An MSU opponent has not had more than five shots on goal in the last 27 games.

The Mustangs created the first chances of the first half, with Hailey shooting high at 2:19, Bella Rose missing left at 5:28 and the Maroon & Gold earning a corner at 11:03. UT Dallas (5-2-1, 1-2-1) pushed back during a physical stretch around 15:21, taking two shots and a corner, and added another corner at 26:21 while the match remained scoreless. MSU applied pressure late in the half as Leeci Snyder, Izzy Amphlett and Binky Mendez forced saves from Melyna Martinez between 28:41 and 35:19, but Avery Riley's late attempt went high for the Comets and the half ended 0-0.

After an early UTD attempt, the Mustangs created the first sustained chances of the second half, with Madison Brinkley and Morgan Countryman putting shots off target before the visitors earned a corner at 61:14. The half tightened through the middle stretch, with fouls on both teams and a yellow card to Sophie Ferro at 68:42, while UT Dallas added an off-target shot at 69:00. MSU pushed again late, as Sloane Sullivan shot at 75:57 and Hailey had attempts at 81:51 and 84:27 before Gonzales scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season at 84:30 off Hailey's assist for a 1-0 lead. UT Dallas had a late chance, but Lauren Short saved Ella Spiller's shot at 87:01 before the Maroon & Gold closed out the 1-0 result.
