WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 34-ranked Midwestern State did not drop a set on its way to a 7-0 victory over visiting UT Permian Basin on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs are 6-0 at MSU Tennis Center this season and have only conceded three dual-match points on home courts.
Midwestern State (11-5, 3-1) won the doubles point for the 14th time in 16 dual matches, and the three doubles pairings only lost three games combined.
The No. 9-ranked duo of
Selin Sepken and
Emilia Gyorgy ended a three-match losing streak with a resounding 6-0 win over Dinethya Dharmaratne and Paige Sitanggang at No. 2 doubles.
Sepken and Gyorgy improved to 10-6 this season. The duo is 3-3 in six matches against nationally ranked opponents.
Hattie Berend and
Alessia Dolce improved to 8-0 at No. 3 doubles and secured the first dual-match point of the day for the Mustangs with a 6-1 win over Alyssa Glasgow and Peyton Jones.
Camila Garcia and
Jasmine Crain were coming off their only loss in 15 matches. The duo had a 4-0 lead against Oshini Herath and Alexandra Luders of Lubbock Christian before suffering a 6-4 defeat on Friday. But on an ideal day for tennis under clear skies, the potent pairing played No. 1 doubles for the first time this season and breezed to a 6-2 victory over Fanny Bergstrom and Sophia Rashid.
The Mustangs, who swept all six singles matches against Lubbock Christian, picked up where they left off on Friday.
Sepken, ranked No. 6 in singles, sashayed to her seventh straight win and improved to 12-1 by defeating Bergstrom 6-2, 6-1. The fifth-year senior from Turkey has played exclusively at No. 1 singles this season, and she has posted eight wins in straight sets.
Berend delivered her most convincing win of the season. The junior played steady tennis on her way to a 6-0, 6-0 Easter Sunday victory over Sophia Crosby at No. 6 singles. Berend won her third match in four outings and is 5-2 since dropping her first three matches of the season. The Wichita Falls native is 4-1 on home soil this spring.
Garcia posted her seventh consecutive win at No. 3 singles as she overmatched Rashid, 6-2, 6-2, and clinched the dual-match victory for the Mustangs. The sophomore from Colombia improved her record to 13-2 this season, and she is 4-0 against conference opponents.
Dolce continued her fine form in singles with her sixth straight-set win of the season, dealing Mattea Bowe a 6-2, 6-3 defeat at No. 4 singles. Dolce won for the fifth time in her last seven singles matches and is 5-0 in home matches for the Stang Gang.
Crain carried the momentum she gained by winning the first set in a tiebreak to a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win over Sitanggang at No. 5 singles. Crain improved to 3-1 in conference matches, and the freshman from Edmond, Oklahoma, is 4-1 in home matches this season.
It was up to Gyorgy to complete the sweep, and the freshman from Hungary was up to the task. She won for the eighth time in nine matches, blazing her way past Dharmaratne at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4. Gyorgy is 6-0 at MSU Tennis Center — winning all but two sets on home ground — and improved her singles record to 11-5 this season.
Midwestern State leaves the favorable surroundings of its home campus for road duals at UT Dallas on Friday at 2 p.m. and at UT Tyler on Saturday. First serve at Summers Tennis Center is scheduled for 10 a.m.
