Determined effort propels Stangs to 7-0 win over UTPB at MSU Tennis Center

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Tomas Leguizamon defeated Christian Lopez, 6-2, 6-1, clinching the dual-match victory for No. 19-ranked Midwestern State over UT Permian Basin, and the Mustangs were able to complete a 7-0 sweep of the Falcons on Sunday afternoon at MSU Tennis Center.

Midwestern State (9-4, 1-1) rebounded from a 5-2 loss to Lubbock Christian on Friday and may have gained confidence from individual performances in an exhibition at Baylor on Saturday.

Leguizamon took Blake Anderson of Baylor to three sets on Saturday and then dominated his match at No. 6 singles on Sunday. The freshman from Colombia lost to Marco Seccia of LCU on Friday, 1-6, 3-6. With his victory on Sunday, Leguizamon improved his singles record to 3-4 this season.

Juan David Duque and Bruno Sanchez set the tone for the dual by wiping out Kabir Chothani and Nehal Naidoo in a mere 19 minutes, 6-0. Duque and Sanchez improved to 4-5 at No. 1 doubles this season.

Fifteen minutes later, Matthew Earle and Germano Setti clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Andrew Hunsley and Lukas Nakasato. Earle and Setti extended their winning streak to 10 matches and improved their doubles record to 11-1, including two wins in the LSC.

Jose Marquez only needed 48 minutes to end Chothani's day on the court with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. The senior from Oaxaca, Mexico, won for the sixth time in seven matches and improved his record at No. 4 singles to 5-2. He is 9-4 in singles overall this spring.

Earle handled Andrew Hunsley at No. 5 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1. The fifth-year senior from Ireland was coming off back-to-back home losses. Jordan Georgiev won two tightly contested sets for Lubbock Christian on Friday, and Iori Furuhata of Hawaii Hilo won a three-set battle with Earle, who improved his singles record to 4-5 with his straight-set win on Sunday.

Bruno Sanchez won back-to-back matches for the first time since Feb. 28 by disposing of Lukas Nakasato at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5. The junior from Spain alternated wins and losses over his last seven matches since defeating Jami Savolainen of Auburn Montgomery 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4).

The indefatigable Setti, ranked No. 14 among NCAA Division II players, outlasted Joao D'Amorim 6-7 (2), 6-2, (10-4). Setti improved his record at No. 1 singles to 8-3 and rebounded from a 5-7, 6-4, 3-6 loss to No. 5-ranked Kelly Giese of Lubbock Christian in a match that took nearly three hours to complete on Friday.

In between, Setti played No. 1 singles at the Baylor exhibition and split sets with D1 No. 34-ranked Connor Van Schalkwyk 7-6 (6), 2-6. Setti won the first game of the third set when the match was abandoned. He also played doubles three-straight days.

Duque won the most contentious match of the day, defeating Naidoo at No. 3 singles 4-6, 6-2, (15-13). Naidoo had four match points slip away during the match tiebreak, and Duque denied the Falcons a single dual-match point while winning for the fifth time in six matches. The senior from Colombia improved to 8-5 in singles this season, and he is 4-1 at MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs are 4-1 as the host in dual matches this season but will be on the road for their next four duals. The first stop is UTD Tennis Complex in Richardson, Texas, to face UT Dallas on April 10 at 2 p.m.  The following day, MSU visits UT Tyler for a 1 p.m. dual match.
