Lacoste defends individual title at Hardscrabble Invitational

FORT SMITH, Ark.– No. 24-ranked Midwestern State is part of the 14-team field at the Hardscrabble Invitational hosted by Arkansas-Fort Smith. The 54-hole tournament tees off at Hardscrabble Country Club on Monday morning, and the second round will take place on Monday afternoon. The final round is scheduled to be played on Tuesday.

Romane Lacoste, who transferred to Midwestern State from Northwestern Oklahoma State, won the individual title at Hardscrabble last year, shooting a 2-under 69 in the final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 8-over 218, three strokes better than Missouri Southern's Katarina Chaynoranska.

The Mustangs have not played in a tournament since their third place finish at the Rattler Invitational last month, when Alli Reily, Lacoste and Mary Kerr all finished in the top-10.

Reily tied for fifth place on the individual leaderboard at 7-over 223 for 54 holes after shooting even-par with three birdies in the final round. Lacoste shot 1-under 71 in the final round at Dominion Country Club and tied for seventh at 8-over 224. Kerr was in a four-way for ninth place with a three-round total of 9-over 225.

Midwestern State was 13-over 301 in the final round to finish the tournament at 36-over 900 — 10 strokes better than fourth-place UT Tyler. Dallas Baptist won the tournament with a 2-over 866, finishing 23 strokes better than St. Mary's.

Cameron and Lubbock Christian are the only other Lone Star Conference programs competing at Hardscrabble Invitational this week.

Midwestern State was the runner-up at the tournament last year, finishing 78-over 918 to tie for second with Lubbock Christian.

Henderson State won the team title last year with a 63-over 903.

Kodi Nolen tied for 17th place on the individual leaderboard last year with a 54-hole total of 19-over 229.

Reily finished in a tie for 25th place at 25-over 235, and Mary Kerr tied for 80th place at 49-over 259.

Hardscrabble was designed by Perry Maxwell and built in 1926 and renovated in 1998 by Jay and Carter Morrish. Maxwell also designed Prairie Dunes near Hutchinson, Kansas, Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

There is a rich history of women's golf at Hardscrabble, where Patty Berg, Babe Zaharias and Betty Jameson won the Hardscrabble Open, which was staged from 1945-1953.

The weather forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with easterly winds at 10 to 15 mph and temperatures in the low 70s for both days of the tournament.
