Hawaii Hilo makes first visit to MSU Tennis Center

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 27-ranked Midwestern State seeks its fourth consecutive dual-match victory as it hosts Hawaii Hilo on Wednesday afternoon at MSU Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Midwestern State is 5-3 this season after defeating McKendree on Saturday, 5-2.

Matthew Earle clinched the triumph for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Riccardo Ercolani at No. 5 singles. Earle has won three of his last four completed matches at No. 5 singles and improved his singles record to 3-3.

Earle and Germano Setti clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Felix Diedrichs and Riccardo Ercolani at No. 2 doubles. Earle and Setti have won seven consecutive doubles matches and improved to 8-1 for the season.

No. 8-ranked Setti was upset at No. 1 singles, falling to Ignacio Paolini in a match tiebreak, 4-6, 6-3, 6-10. Setti is 6-2 in singles this season with all eight starts at Line 1.

Bruno Sanchez earned his second win in three matches over a three-day span, defeating Bendix Schroeder of McKendree, 6-2, 6-4. Sanchez improved to 4-3 at No. 2 singles this season and 6-3 overall in singles.

Sanchez and Cesar Loeches Llamas have played No. 1 doubles in the three most recent duals and improved to 2-1 with a 6-3 win over Ignacio Paolini and Bendix Schroeder.

Jose Marquez has a four-match winning streak at No. 3 singles. The streak began with a 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 19-ranked Rafael Sabio of West Florida. After losing the first set to Diedrichs of McKendree, Marquez rebounded nicely to prevail, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Juan David Duque ran away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles on Saturday, defeating Luka Kalenic of McKendree. Duque has a three-match winning streak in singles and won four of his last five singles matches.

Duque and Jose Marquez started the dual against McKendree with a 6-1 win over Aimar Oregui and Arhaan Pahwa at No. 3 doubles, improving their record as a doubles' pairing to 2-1.

Tomas Leguizamon, a freshman from Colombia, has made six appearances and completed four matches at No. 6 singles. Leguizamon lost a match tiebreak to Aimar Oregui of McKendree, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 0-1 (5-10), and fell to 1-3 for the season. Leguizamon celebrated his first collegiate singles' win with 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Florian Gayme of No. 31-ranked Harding on Friday at MSU Tennis Center.

The Vulcans and Mustangs are meeting for the sixth time, and Hawaii Hilo leads the all-time series, 3-2, including a 4-1 victory at Biola Tennis Center in La Mirada, California, three years ago.

Hawaii Hilo squares off with Cameron before meeting the Mustangs and is facing four Lone Star Conference teams in its visit to the region. The Vulcans defeated UT Dallas in Richardson, Texas, on Monday, 4-0, and UT Tyler is hosting the Vulcans on Friday.

Hawaii Hilo won two of three duals on a recent trip to California, defeating Westmont and Menlo Oaks before succumbing to Azusa Pacific, 7-0. The Vulcans arrived in the Texoma region with a 4-3 record.

Junior Jaime Paquet of won six of his first seven match at No. 1 singles for Hawaii Hilo, and freshman Spaniard Max Solano has been reliable at No. 2 singles with a 5-1 record.

Hawaii Hilo is 22-16 in singles with 2-4 records at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Three players have combined to go 3-3 at No. 5 singles, and four players have combined to go 4-3 at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Iori Furuhata, who hails from Hilo, Hawaii, has played both Line 5 and Line 6, posting a 3-1 record this season. 

The Vulcans won the doubles point in three of their first seven dual matches and have an 8-10 record in doubles this season. Three pairings have combined to go 5-2 at No. 3 doubles, but the Vulcans only won Line 1 doubles once, and they have two wins at No. 2 doubles.

Hawaii Hilo of the PacWest Conference is led by head coach Guilherme De Medeiros of Brazil, who played collegiate tennis at Lewis-Clark State College, Hawaii Pacific and Long Island University.  De Medeiros was a 2019 NCAA Division II Championship Semifinalist after winning the PacWest Conference Championship.

Midwestern State plays one more non-conference dual match at Tyler JC on March 25. Conference play begins at MSU Tennis Center on April 3, when Lubbock Christian visits the Mustangs for a dual match at 10 a.m.
