HUMBLE, Texas – Midwestern State Men's Golf kicks off the spring segment of the 2025-26 season at the Houston Classic, playing a 54-hole tournament Monday and Tuesday at Golf Club of Houston.
The field features 17 programs, including four team from the Lone Star Conference; Cameron, No. 23 DBU, Oklahoma Christian, and No. 11 West Texas A&M. The Mustangs will also compete against other nationally ranked opponents, competing against No. 3 Central Oklahoma, No. 33 Missouri-St. Louis, along with Division I team Houston.
The No. 39-ranked Mustangs, based off the most recent Scoreboard Clippd rankings, closed out the fall with a 5th place finish at the DBU classic, shooting a combined 881 (18-over par) as a team. MSU finished behind St. Mary's, Central Oklahoma, DBU, and Southern Arkansas.
Seth Bearden posted his second top-5 finish at the DBU Classic, garnering fourth place (four-under par). The senior recently competed in the The Patriot All-America, competing against PIN All-American from all three NCAA Divisons.
Ryan Griff finished two-over par after 54 holes, but was great through the first 36 holes, shooting three-under. The sophomore finished in 12th for the Mustangs, posting a joint team high 11 birdies.
Anniston McIlwain carded a 224 (eight-over par), staying consistent through the three rounds, finishing in 33rd. McIlwain posted a 75 stroke count on the opening round, wrapping up the tournament with a 74 and 75.
Nathan Nelson carded 12-over par, while Chase Kisver competed as an individual and finished 13-over par.
Hank Germany rounded out the group with a tournament score 21-over par (86-75-76).
The Mustangs competed in the Houston Classic last season, finishing 5th of 16 teams. Seth Bearden topped the leader board after a shortened two round tournament, shooting 138 to finish six-under par (69-69). Hank Germany and Ryan Griff both competed along side Bearden, each shooting six-over par in 36 holes (150).
Golf Club of Houston, which opened in the 1960s, was designed by George Fazio. The course setup is a par-72 and 7,772-yards.
The forecast for Monday predicts partly cloudy skies with 13 mph winds coming from the south. Temperatures are projected to reach 81 degrees, with tee-time temps at 60 degrees. Tuesday calls for much of the same, with more clouds then Monday and a slight up tick in wind (15 mph)
