TYLER, Texas – No. 12-ranked Midwestern State faces three top 25 opponents when it travels to the "Rose Capital of America" this week. No. 3-ranked West Alabama meets the Mustangs on Friday. No. 25-Auburn Montgomery will be across the net on Saturday, and No. 2-ranked West Florida is the opponent on Sunday. All three dual matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Midwestern State (3-1) is coming off a 4-2 loss at No. 11-ranked Washburn, which was the fourth dual in as many days for the Stang Gang. MSU posted wins over Nebraska Kearney and Rockhurst at Ernest Grundy Tennis Center in Kearney, Nebraska, before traveling to Topeka. The Mustangs also played an exhibition against Collin College at MSU Tennis Center before hitting the road last week.
Selin Sepken, a senior from Istanbul, Turkey, is 3-0 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs. The No. 10-ranked player in the nation swept past Patricija Cechanaviciute of Nebraska Kearney and outlasted No. 8-ranked Eleanor Coleman of Rockhurst, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Sepken split sets with No. 14-ranked Renske Ubachs of Washburn and was knotted 2-2 in the third set when the Ichabods clinched a 4-2 victory on Sunday.
Camila Garcia is 4-0 at No. 3 singles after defeating No. 48-ranked Daniela Tijaro of Washburn in a rollercoaster match, 6-3, 0-6, 6-1.
Freshman Emilia Gyorgy is 2-2 in four appearances at No. 2 singles. Gyorgy lost a match tiebreak to Fabiana Gamboa 7-6, 4-6, 0-8 at Nebraska Kearney but followed that with a 6-1, 6-2 thrashing of Sofia Valdespiono of Rockhurst. Gyorgy lost two tight sets to No. 40-ranked Riko Konno of Washburn, 5-7, 5-7.
Alessia Dolce is 2-1 at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Valentina Zamora of Nebraska Kearney. The sophomore from Latisana, Italy, suffered her first defeat on Sunday as Saajida Raznic posted a 6-2, 6-1 win for Washburn.
Midwestern State is 12-9 in singles matches and 10-2 in doubles through the first four duals against NCAA Division II teams.
The Mustangs claimed the doubles point in all four duals to start the season with pairings at No. 1 and No. 2 combining for an 8-0 record.
Sepken and Gyorgy improved to 4-0 at No. 1 doubles with a 6-4 victory over No. 4-ranked Tijaro and Ubachs of Washburn.
Garcia and Jasmine Crain are undefeated in four matches at No. 2 doubles., including a 6-2 win over Peyton Koper and Riko Konno of Washburn.
WEST ALABAMA (4-2)
Midwestern State is meeting the Tigers for the third straight year in Tyler and won the two previous encounters, including a 5-2 victory last season.
West Alabama is coming off a 4-3 victory over No. 2-ranked Nova Southeastern at the Indoor Nationals in Indianapolis, where the Tigers went 2-1 with a 4-1 win over No. 4-ranked Flagler. The only loss came at the hands of No. 1-ranked Barry, which prevailed 4-1 on Saturday.
Shaira Rivera is 5-1 at No. 1 singles for the Tigers, and Jenaila Prullia is 4-0 at No. 5 singles. Prulia is 5-0 overall with a win at No. 4 singles.
Rivera had a five-match winning streak thwarted by No. 4-ranked Kristyna Hranacova of Nova Southeastern, who prevailed 6-2, 6-4. One day earlier Rivera had beaten third-ranked Dana Heiman of Barry, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Alex Millam is ranked No. 4 among NCAA Division II singles players, and she is coming off a 6-4, 6-4 win over Katja Markus of Nova Southeastern.
Rivera and Millam are 3-1 at No. 1 doubles for the Tigers, and the duo's only loss came to No. 1-ranked Markus and Hranacova of Nova Southeastern, 3-6.
AUBURN MONTGOMERY (2-4)
Midwestern State has split its last two dual matches with the Warhawks in Tyler, but last year the Mustangs posted a 4-1 victory despite dropping the doubles point.
Auburn Montgomery is scheduled to play Cameron on Friday before facing the Mustangs on Saturday.
The Warhawks were swept by No. 6-ranked Embry Riddle on Monday in Columbus, Georgia. No. 3-ranked North Georgia defeated Auburn Montgomery, 6-1, in a dual match on Feb. 16. The Warhawks also have losses to Nova Southeastern and No. 10-ranked Columbus State.
Auburn Montgomery is 8-10 in singles with a 7-10 doubles record.
WEST FLORIDA (3-3)
The Argonauts are 6-1 in their all-time series with Midwestern State, but the Mustangs only win in the series came last year in Tyler. MSU edged West Florida, 4-3.
West Florida finished 2-1 at the ITA National Indoor Championship, defeating No. 3-ranked North Georgia, 4-2, and No. 2-ranked Nova Southeastern, 4-3. Its only loss was to No. 1-ranked Barry in the finals, 4-0.
Kylie Kochis is 5-1 in singles for the Argonauts, but she has played exclusively at No. 6 singles. West Florida is 17-15 in singles, and the team is 8-7 in doubles matches. Guadalupe Martinez is 4-1 in doubles with a 4-0 mark in the No. 2 spot, playing alongside Aline Midori Da Silva.
West Florida is scheduled to play at Mississippi College before arriving in Tyler, where they will play the host Patriots and Cameron before clashing with Midwestern State.
Midwestern State travels to Durant, Oklahoma, for a dual match with Southeastern Oklahoma State on March 6.
