Midwestern State begins four-dual flurry by hosting Collin College

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 8-ranked Midwestern State hosts Collin College at MSU Tennis Center on Thursday at noon before traveling to Nebraska Kearney for three dual matches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Mustangs play the Lopers at Ernest Grundy Tennis Center on Friday at 2 p.m. before facing Rockhurst on Saturday and No. 4-ranked Washburn on Sunday.

Midwestern State hosted Seward County last week and cruised to a 7-0 win, sweeping doubles and only dropping one of six singles matches.

The Mustangs opened their season with a 6-1 victory over Northwest Missouri State as Selin Sepken, ranked No. 1 in the South Central Region and No. 10 in the nation, defeated Miru Nonaka at No. 1 singles to clinch the victory. 

Emilia Gyorgy is ranked No. 5 in the region, and Camila Garcia is ranked No. 6.

Gyorgy played No. 2 singles against Northwest Missouri State and easily handled Marja Djokic, 6-3, 6-1.

Garcia was pushed into a match tiebreak at No. 3 singles against Northwest Missouri but prevailed over Chiharu Ito, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-3.
 

COLLIN COLLEGE (0-5)


Midwestern State has won the last seven meetings and is 9-1 in its all-time series with Collin College, including a 7-0 victory in their last encounter at MSU Tennis Center in 2023.

The Mustangs have posted three consecutive sweeps in the series. The Cougars last earned a point against the Mustangs in 2016, when MSU prevailed, 7-2. Collin College is 0-5 when visiting Midwestern State. 

Collin College is coming off a 4-0 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Cougars have also lost to Texas A&M-Kingsville, Tarleton State, Oral Roberts and McNeese State. 

Nobuhle Zungu earned the only point of the season for the Cougars with a 6-2 victory over Naomi Hagi of McNeese State at No. 6 singles.
 

NEBRASKA KEARNEY (2-1)


Midwestern State is 5-1 all-time against Nebraska Kearney, including a 4-2 victory at Kearney in their last meeting, which was is February of 2023.

Nebraska Kearney opened its season with a 7-0 win over Sioux Falls before suffering a 4-1 loss to Augustana. The Lopers are coming off a 5-2 win over Colorado Mesa. 

Patricija Cechanaviciute, a freshman from Lithuania, is 3-0 at No. 1 singles for the Lopers, including a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over No. 35 ranked Devyn Rodriguez of Colorado Mesa. Cechanaviciute played No. 1 doubles with Clare Pachy against Colorado Mesa and clinched the point against the Mavericks with a 7-5 victory.

The Lopers reached the Sweet 16 last season before suffering a 4-2 loss to Azusa (Calif.) Pacific and finished the season with a 20-6 record in dual matches.

This season Nebraska Kearney was picked third in the MIAA behind Washburn and Central Oklahoma in the preseason poll conducted by MIAA head coaches.
 

ROCKHURST (2-1)


Midwestern State is 5-1 all-time against Rockhurst, including a 4-2 victory in the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship in Altamonte Springs, Florida, last May. 

The Mustangs also defeated the Hawks in the season opener in North Kansas City, Missouri, at the Northland Racquet Club last year. Garcia and Alessia Dolce both earned wins against Rockhurst last season. 

Rockhurst is 2-1 at the start of this season, rebounding from a 4-0 loss to Augustana (S.D.) with a 4-2 win over Missouri Western and a 4-0 sweep of Emporia State.

Ella Coleman is ranked No. 8 in the nation and is 2-0 at No. 1 singles for the Hawks this season. She split sets in an unfinished match against No. 24-ranked Maria Fiacan of Augustana in the season opener. 
 

WASHBURN (2-0)


Midwestern State is 11-1 all-time against Washburn and defeated the Ichabods in Topeka, Kansas, last season, 4-3. Dolce rallied for a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory over Isabella Marensson to clinch the victory for the Mustangs, who have won their last nine meetings with Washburn. 

Midwestern State won each of its last four encounters with the Ichabods by 4-3 scores. The Mustangs are 4-1 against Washburn away from MSU Tennis Center. Washburn's last win in the series was in 2007.

When the two sides clashed a year ago, the Mustangs were ranked No. 5 in the nation, and Washburn was No. 11 in the ITA rankings. This season, Washburn is ranked No. 4 as it meets the No. 8-ranked Mustangs.

Washburn opened its season with a 7-0 sweep of McKendree at Genesis Tennis Center in Topeka, Kansas, and defeated Augustana, 4-1.

No. 14-ranked Renske Ubachs led the charge against Augustana with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mia Garcia at No. 1 singles after the Ichabods dropped the doubles point.  No. 40-ranked Riko Konno upended No. 24-ranked Mia Fiacan at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 48-ranked Daniela Tijaro scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles.

Midwestern State travels to Tyler, Texas, next week for matches against No. 5-ranked West Alabama, No. 22-ranked Auburn-Montgomery and No. 7-ranked West Florida.
