Mustangs return to site of Regional glory

Amarillo, Texas – After an impressive showing at the DBU Classic at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, Texas, the No. 17-ranked Mustangs return to the site of their greatest triumph as they play in the WT Invitational at Tascosa Golf Club – La Paloma Course on Monday and Tuesday.

Midwestern State finished tied for third at the DBU Classic last week, finishing tied for third with Rogers State at 7-over par. The Mustangs played the final nine holes of the tournament at 4-under par.

Mary Kerr led the way with a 3-under 69 in the final round and finished fifth with a two-round score of 2-under 142.

Kerr was part of the team that claimed the program's first NCAA Division II West Region championship last spring at Tascosa Golf Club – La Paloma Course.

The Mustangs combined for a school record low team total of 274 in the final round to catch Dallas Baptist and force a playoff. Midwestern State was 13 strokes behind the Patriots after the first two rounds.

Both teams finished 54 holes at 29-over par, but the Mustangs prevailed in a one-hole playoff and earned their first-ever berth in the NCAA Division II Championships.

Alli Reily, Kodi Nolen and Madison Wert were all part of the team last year and will be in the lineup this week along with Romane Lacoste, who qualified individually for regionals as a sophomore at Northeastern Oklahoma State before transferring to Midwestern State.

Emme Darnold, a freshman from Andrews, Texas, is competing as an individual in the tournament. Darnold was three-time Class 4A State Champion and won 10 titles throughout her high school career.

Midwestern State will be part of a 15-team field that includes: Odessa College, Adams State, CSU Monterey Bay, Western New Mexico, Garden City CC, New Mexico JC, Cameron, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Lubbock Christian, Angelo State, Simon Fraser, UT Permian Basin, Chico State and the hosts West Texas A&M.

La Paloma was originally designed in 1985 by Robert Von Hagge, who also designed The Woodlands TPC and The Cliffs in Texas. The par-72 links style course features bluegrass fairways and bent grass greens.

The weather forecast calls for warm, sunny days with steady south winds at 10-15 mph, gusting 20-25 mph.
