CORNITH, Texas – Midwestern State Women's Golf sits in 4
th place after of the opening 18-holes of the DBU Classic Monday afternoon at Oakmont Country Club.
Midwestern State supplied a team score of 294 (6-over par) in the opening 18 holes. MSU sits in 4
th place among a field of 15 programs, with nine nationally ranked teams involved. The team finished with 61 pars (3rd best), while limiting bogeys and double-bogeys during an efficient first round.
"The girls played extremely well from tee to green," said graduate assistant
Makenna Henry. "They had a lot of good looks at birdie, but today they just weren't falling for them,".
Senior
Alli Reily and sophomore
Mary Kerr both carded a 1-over par 73 on the day. Reily overcame a few early bogeys, shooting a par or better on the final 15 holes of their round. Reily finished with a 34 on the front nine firing a birdie on a par-3 (Hole No. 4) and par-5 (Hole No. 3). Kerr meanwhile birded two of their first three holes, finding par on 10 holes during the round. Both Reily and Kerr stand tied for 21
st, trailing DBU's Madison Ude (4-under par) who leads all 83 competitors.
"Alli started off a little rough, but fought her way back to a solid round. Mary played really well today too, and just missed a few putts to end her round,".
Junior's
Madison Wert and
Romane Lacoste were not far behind, each shooting 2-over par 74 to round out the team countable performances.
Kaetie Samuels finished 4-over par (76) in their first career round for MSU, while
Samantha Truong (also first career round) finished with three birdies, carding an opening round 77 (5-over par).
"Super proud of our two freshman today. They really battled in their first tournament round," said Henry
The reigning national champions, No.1 DBU were the only team to shot under-par in the opening round, finishing 4-under par with a team total of 284. They hold an 8-stroke lead over No. 17 UT Tyler (292/-4).
In third after the first day, (RV) Arkansas Tech lead the Mustangs by one stroke (293/+5), while No. 16 North Georgia sits tied with MSU, shooting 6-over par with a team total of 294, making up the top-five.
"We are sitting on a great spot heading into the final round, I'm excited to see how we finish." said Henry.
Midwestern State will wrap up the two-day tournament with their final 18 holes tomorrow morning, beginning at 8 a.m.
