WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Filip Vacula and
Stephen Slocombe earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-America honors Tuesday afternoon.
Vacula, a freshman from Dolany in the Czech Republic, became the second MSU student-athlete to earn All-America honors for both singles and doubles play. He is the first to accomplish the feat in the same season.
Vacula and Slocombe teamed to post a 13-6 record while playing at the No. 1 doubles position this spring and finished the year ranked ninth in the ITA's D2 doubles national rankings.
The duo boasted a 5-3 mark against other nationally ranked opposition, including pair of wins over UT Tyler's Carel Wessel and Daniil Felker, who also gained All-America honors by finishing the campaign ranked fifth.
Slocombe is the first MSU player to earn All-America honors in doubles with two different partners after teaming with
Luis Diaz Argente last season.
He joins Angel Palacios, who was a two-time singles All American in 2019 and 2020, and Brett Emerson as the only Mustangs to garner All-America honors in multiple seasons. Emerson teamed with Zac Dillard to earn doubles acclaim in 2006, then gained singles honors in 2007.
Vacula ranked 11th in the final ITA D2 singles rankings of the season. The right-hander posted a 12-7 mark while playing at the No. 1 position.
Seven of his 12 victories came against national ranked opponents, including four of in the Top 10. He took down Rockhurst's Semyon Tsyrenov (10th), Harding's Cas De Ruiter (4th), UT Tyler's Carel Wessel (7th), and Lubbock Christian's Kelly Giese (9th).
As a team, the Mustangs finished 18th in the final ITA team poll of the season, which represented its highest ranking since closing the 2019 campaign at 16th.
Sophomore
Bruno Sanchez carried a national singles ranking of 32nd, while junior
Juan David Duque was 36th.
