ARLINGTON, Texas -- Midwestern State found itself in a similar scenario for the second-straight year in the semifinal round of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament.
And, once again, the No. 3-ranked Mustangs bowed out to homestanding and sixth-seeded Dallas Baptist, which enjoyed the unearned privilege of playing on its home courts at the Arlington Tennis Center.
The Patriots rolled to a 4-2 win to move on to the finals later Saturday afternoon against UT Tyler. UTT defeated top-seeded St. Mary's in the other semifinal match.
Dallas Baptist won for the third consecutive time against the Mustangs at the Arlington Tennis Center, but MSU was victorious in each of the other 12 meeting between the programs dating back to the 2013 campaign.
That advantage was apparent from the start on Saturday.
DBU's Emily Buchanan and Jenna Payne struck first for the Patriots, taking a 6-3 win over
Camila Garcia and
Hannah Yip at the No. 2 position.
Shortly after, Isabella Rios and Madalyn Smelley delivered the doubles point with a 6-4 win over
Jessica Binzari and
Anda Ghinga at No. 1.
Buchanan, who was voted the LSC's Player of the Year by the league's coaches, extended DBU's lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Garcia. The sophomore from Jackson, Mississippi, remained prefect at 23-0 while losing just three sets at No. 5 singles.
DBU freshman Andrea Delgado pushed the Patriots' lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over
Sydney Williams at No. 6. The Pats, who improved to a combined 61-4 at the bottom three positions, need just one more point to clinch the victory.
But Midwestern State fought back for a pair of wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions.
Senior
Jessica Binzari improved to 14-3 at the top of the lineup with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Katherine Robinson at No. 1, while fellow senior
Anda Ghinga won her 13th-straight match, taking down Leonie Schondelmaier 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 3.
Sophomore Madalyn Smelley finished off the match for DBU with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Yip at No. 2.
MSU sophomore
Sofia Giraldo led Isabella Rios 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 3-0 when the match ended.
Dallas Baptist improved to 21-4, while the Mustangs fell to 20-3.
