Midwestern State meets Rockhurst in first round of Women's Tennis Championship

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Midwestern State makes its 10th all-time appearance in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship and faces Rockhurst (Mo.) in the first round at Sanlando Park on Wednesday at 11 a.m. CDT.

MSU is 21-3 this season, including a season-opening win over Rockhurst at Northland Racquet Club in North Kansas City, Missouri.

The Mustangs are the No. 3 seed in a field of 16 regional champions competing in the single-elimination tournament. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday with the semifinals slated for Saturday, and the championship dual will be contested on Sunday.

MSU is 7-1 in neutral site matches this season with its only loss coming against top-ranked Barry (Fla.) at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in February.

Midwestern State is making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship. The Mustangs reached the semifinals last year as the No. 5 seed, scoring a 5-0 win over Queens (N.Y.) in the first round and ousting No. 4-seed Wingate (N.C.) in the quarterfinals, 4-3.

No. 6-ranked Jessica Binzari clinched this year's berth with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Anastasiia Opolska of Lubbock Christian as the Mustangs defeated the Lady Chaps, 4-2, to claim the South Central Region I title.

Binzari has been a stalwart for the Mustangs in each of the last two seasons. The senior from Constanta, Romania, finished last season with a 14-9 record at No. 1 singles, winning seven of her last eight matches, including a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Eva Rivoal of Queens in the first round of the Women's Tennis Championship.

This season, the left-hander has posted a 17-4 record, winning 15 of 18 matches at No. 1 singles. Binzari is 4-1 against nationally ranked opponents and takes a four-match winning streak into the national tournament.

Binzari helped propel the Mustangs to a 6-1 victory over Rockhurst in the season opener on Feb. 7 with a win at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Sofia Giraldo is ranked No. 32 among NCAA Division II players and has reeled off 12 straight victories for the Mustangs, including a 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory over Oshini Herath of Lubbock Christian in South Central Regional I.

The sophomore from Cali, Colombia, is 17-5 in singles this season, winning all 11 of the matches she has played in the No. 4 position this season.

Giraldo clinched the Mustangs 4-3 win over Wingate in the national quarterfinals last season with a thrilling 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4 win over Fernanda Castilla at No. 4 singles.

Giraldo pulled away from Marina Magui of Rockurst 6-3, 6-0 in her first match of the season.

Hannah Yip, a senior from Ipoh, Malaysia, has a career singles record of 52-42 in her four seasons at Midwestern State. Yip is 14-9 in singles this season, winning 12 of her 19 matches at No. 2 singles. Yip opened the season at No. 1 singles and lost in a match tiebreak to then No. 44-ranked Eleanor Coleman of Rockhurst, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 13-11.

Yip earned two victories at the Women's Tennis Championship last year. She waltzed past Caroline Fawzy of Queens, 6-3, 6-1, and coasted to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Suzuka Sambyakugari of Wingate at No. 3 singles.

This season, Ghinga is 19-3 in singles, winning 11 of her 12 matches at No. 3 singles. The Romanian had a 13-match winning streak snapped in the regional showdown with Lubbock Christian.

Ghinga won twice at No. 2 singles in the national tournament last year, defeating Maja Makal of Queens  6-2, 6-1 before dismantling No. 35-ranked Chloe Kosmrlj of Wingate 6-0, 6-2.

Senior Sydney Williams of Austin, Texas, is coming off an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alexandra Luders of Lubbock Christian at No. 6 singles in the South Central Regional, and she improved her season record in singles to 9-5. Williams was narrowly defeated by Annika Hakovirta of Wingate in the national tournament last season.

Camila Garcia, a freshman from Cali, Colombia, made her collegiate debut against Daniela Lentisco of Rockhurst and posted a routine 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles. Garcia enters the national tournament with a 10-6 record, and she has played exclusively in the No. 5 position.

Midwestern State has a .736 winning percentage in singles matches this season (92-33), and the Mustangs are 46-19 (.708) in doubles. MSU has claimed the doubles point in 16 of its 24 duals this year.

Yip and Garcia were 8-2 in doubles during Lone Star Conference play this season. The pair clinched the doubles point for MSU in its regional dual with a 6-3 win over Luders and Opolska of Lubbock Christian.

Williams and Sarah Mazaraki lead the Mustangs with 15 wins as a duo, and they played all 19 of their matches in the No. 3 position.

Midwestern State is 4-1 all-time against Rockhurst and has won the last four encounters. This will be the first postseason confrontation between the two programs.

The Hawks enter the national tournament with a 12-dual winning streak after coming from behind to defeat Indianapolis in the Midwest Regional, 4-3, improving to 18-5 for the season. Rockhurst has won all six of its neutral site duals this year and has an overall record of 18-5.

Coleman is No. 23 in the ITA Collegiate Singles Rankings and is 17-4 at No. 1 singles this season after a dramatic 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (3) victory over 37th-ranked Tyffaine Paris of Indianapolis in the regional final.

Rockhurst was 21-1 in singles matches against Great Lakes Valley Conference competition this season and won 69.2 percent of their singles matches overall (83-37). The Hawks were 41-20 (.672) in doubles, including a 12-0 record in GLVC duals.

The Hawks won the doubles point in 17 duals this season, but they were swept by Midwestern State in their early season encounter.
