Javelinas and Rambelles visit No. 2-ranked Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 2-ranked Midwestern State returns to MSU Tennis Center this weekend looking to extend its eight dual-match winning streak. Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State visit the Mustangs on Friday and Sunday. The Javelinas take the court at 3 p.m. on Friday, and the Rambelles square off with MSU at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Midwestern State is 14-1 overall this season and 3-0 in conference play after defeating UT Permian Basin, 6-1, in Odessa last week.

Jessica Binzari, a senior from Romania, leads the Mustangs with a 10-2 record in singles, including an 8-1 record in the No. 1 position. Binzari, who is No. 5 in the ITA singles national rankings, is 3-0 this year in matches against ranked opponents.

Senior left-hander Hannah Yip has won four of her last five matches, including a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Rhea Singh of UTPB at No. 2 singles.

Anda Ghinga has a five-match winning streak and is 11-2 this season with her last three wins coming in the No. 3 position. The senior from Romania is coming off a 7-5, 6-7 (3), 10-8 victory over Teodora Vrucan of UTPB.

Sofia Giraldo, ranked No. 24 among NCAA Division II singles players, has a four-match winning streak after breezing past Fanny Bergstrom at UTPB last week, 6-2, 6-2. Giraldo is 3-0 in conference matches and 3-0 at No. 4 singles. The sophomore from Colombia is 9-5 overall in singles.

Sydney Williams has reeled off six-straight singles victories, and she has won her last six matches alongside Sarah Mazaraki in doubles. The senior from Austin, Texas, is a combined 18-5 for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State is 56-20 in singles this season with a 28-12 record in doubles. The Mustangs have won the doubles point in each of their last five dual matches and have taken the first point in 11 of 15 duals this season.

Binzari and Ghinga are ranked No. 20 in the nation among NCAA Division II doubles pairings, but the Romanian duo is 0-3 at No. 1 doubles against LSC opponents. MSU is 13-1 at No. 2 doubles and 11-3 in the No. 3 position this season.

Texas A&M-Kingsville is coming off a 4-3 win over Cameron on Thursday afternoon. The Javelinas earned the doubles point and won No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles at Streich-Henry Tennis Complex in Lawton, Oklahoma.

With the victory, the Javelinas improve to 9-5 for the season and 3-2 in the LSC. TAMUK has won four of its last five dual matches.

Andrea Landaeta clinched the win for Texas A&M-Kingsville with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Alexsa Paucar at No. 6 singles. Manuela Turolo and Annika Andersson Gomez also posted victories in singles for the Javelinas.

Landaeta and Annalena Noll upended Anastasia Uspenskaia and Paucar at No. 2 doubles, while Kaitlin Blount and Luna Jokanovic scored a 6-2 win over Mara Vidal and Anna Deuringer at No. 3 doubles.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with TAMUK, 15-2, and routed the Javelinas at MSU Tennis Center last spring, 6-1, and has won all seven confrontations on home soil.

Angelo State arrives in Wichita Falls with a 12-3 record overall but is coming off a 5-2 loss to UT Tyler and is 1-2 in conference duals.

Two of the Rambelles losses have come against highly ranked opponents. No. 3-ranked Flagler defeated Angelo State, 5-2, and No. 21-ranked Dallas Baptist pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Rambelles.

Angelo State boasts a 54-30 record in singles, and is 25-14 in doubles matches this spring.

Avery Durham, Elise Gilis and Ivet Stancheva have propelled Angelo State to a 12-1 record at No. 6 singles, while Durham and Eva Schwartz are 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Schwartz is 7-7 at No. 1 singles for the Rambelles, who are 11-3 at the No. 3 position. Jessica Li has won six of her eight starts and No. 3 singles.

Midwestern State is 2-4 in its head-to-head meetings with Angelo State, including a 4-3 victory at home last spring. The Rambelles have lost two of their three previous visits to MSU Tennis Center. Angelo State had won four consecutive dual matches against the Mustangs prior to its loss last season.

Midwestern State travels to Alpine, Texas, for a conference clash with Sul Ross State before traveling to Western New Mexico next week. First serve against the Lobos is slated for 9 a.m. on April 11.
