Midwestern State splits LSC regular season title with St. Mary's

Rattlers snap MSU's 14-match winning streak, 4-3

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 14-ranked St. Mary's snapped Midwestern State's 14-match winning streak to earn a share of the Lone Star Conference regular season title with a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs (20-2, 9-1 LSC) head into the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament as the No. 2 seed and face the winner of No. 3-seeded Lubbock Christian and No. 6-seeded Dallas Baptist in the semifinal round Friday afternoon at the Arlington Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.

MSU seniors Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga rolled to a 6-1 win over Stela Sifuentes and Selina Wu at No. 1 doubles, but the Rattlers claimed the point by winning the final two doubles matches.

Ghinga leveled the match at 1-1 by making quick work of Janel Ospanova at No. 3 singles. It was her 12th consecutive singles win as Ghinga improved to 18-2 during the dual season.

Sophomore Sofia Giraldo followed with her 11th-straight win, beating Paula Garrote 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 to give the Mustangs a 2-1 edge.

Sifuentes pulled the Rattlers back into a tie at 2-all by beating MSU freshman Camila Garcia 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5.

The teams split the next two matches coming off of the court with Binzari taking out Wu - 6-3, 7-6 - at No. 1, while St. Mary's Alessia Terlizzi beat Hannah Yip 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2.

Midwestern State appeared to have the edge at No. 6 with Sydney Williams holding a 5-3 lead in the deciding set against Gia Posito after the duo split the opening sets with Williams claiming a 6-4 victory in the opening and Posito rallying for a 6-4 win in the second.

Posito fought off a match point to push the third set into a tiebreaker.

Williams was unable to convert four more match points before Posito closed out to win the tiebreaker, 13-11.
