No. 24 Mustangs blow past St. Mary's in regular season finale

MSU to face Cameron in LSC quarterfinals

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 24-ranked Midwestern State eliminated St. Mary's from postseason contention Sunday, blasting the Rattlers 6-1 at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs, who improved to 13-5 overall and to 5-3 in league play, earned the No. 4 seed in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament and face No. 5-seeded Cameron in the quarterfinal round Thursday morning at the Arlington Tennis Center. First serve is set for 9 a.m.

The winner moves on to play top-seeded UT Tyler in the semifinal round Friday morning at 9 a.m.

The Mustangs wasted little time taking control against St. Mary's, rolling to wins in all three doubles matches, then won the first five singles matches coming off of the courts.

MSU's No. 11-ranked duo of Stephen Slocombe and Filip Vacula dusted St. Mary's Leonhard Fabbri and Bernhard Hauer 6-1 at No. 1, then Juan David Duque and Killian Guillou doubled up Lincoln Baldonado and Alvaro Soler 6-3 at No. 2.

Bruno Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen closed the doubles sweep by surviving Aaron Ben Anton and Pierre Copin, 7-4, in a tiebreaker.

The Mustangs dominated at the top of the singles order with Sanchez rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Fabbri at No. 2 before Vacula ran past Lucas Castillo Sanchez 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1.

Junior Juan David Duque put the Mustangs on the brink with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Baldonado at No. 6.

Junior Killian Guillou followed with the clinch by claiming his sixth consecutive singles win, taking down Anton 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 5 position.

Junior Jose Marquez added a sixth victory for the Mustangs with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Copin at No. 4 before Soler staved off the sweep for the Rattlers by edging Slocombe 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3.

St. Mary's closes the season with a 9-9 overall record, going 4-4 in LSC play.
