Mustangs take season series from No. 7 Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Midwestern State earned a twin bill split with No. 7-ranked Angelo State Friday night in Lone Star Conference play at Mayer Park.

The Rambelles took the opener 7-0, then the Mustangs rallied for a 6-5 win in the night cap.

MSU took three of four games from the Rambelles after sweeping them earlier this season in Wichita Falls.

The Mustangs (20-31, 17-25 LSC) claimed their 20th win of the season. It was the first time since 2019 the program reached the milestone and it was just the second time in nine seasons.

Midwestern State utilized an 11-hit attack, scoring four runs in the fifth inning and two more in the six to take control in the nightcap.

Senior first baseman Myranda Jimenez delivered the big on a two-run, infield single in the fifth inning, while Jessika Roberts and Emma Roach also drove in runs to give the Mustangs a 4-2 edge.

Roach struck again in the sixth, ripping a two-run single down the third-base line to stretch the MSU advance to 6-2.

But Angelo State retaliated with three runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Ashton McMillan's two-run homer to left field as the Rambelles clawed back to within a run at 6-5.

Midwestern State starter Addison Lindemann slammed the door in the seventh by striking out Erin Plunkett and Laylonna Applin to secure the victory for the Mustangs.

Lindemann improved to 9-15 in the circle, limiting the 'Belles to three earned runs on five hits in the complete game. She registered five strikeouts.

Roach led the Mustangs' attack by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Jimenez was also 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs.
Jessika Roberts chipped in two more hits, while scoring two runs with an RBI.

Angelo State's Cheyenne Floyd (23-5) pitched a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to lead the Rambelles to a 7-0 win in Game 1.

The 'Belles erupted for five unearned runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Abby Brand before Laylonna Applin capped the frame with a two-run single through the right side to take a 5-0 lead.

Zoey De Baca drove in another run on a double to the right-field gap in the fifth inning before Ashton McMillan tacked on another with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Camile Nunez, Myranda Jimenez, and Emma Roach accounted for the Mustangs' hits. All were singles.

Sophomore Kayleigh Bowers took the loss in the circle to fall to 6-7 despite allowing one earned run on five hits over five innings.

Midwestern State closes the regular season with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Lubbock Christian. First pitches are set for 1 and 3 p.m.

Angelo State moved to 42-10 overall and 33-9 in Lone Star Conference play.
