No. 2-ranked Mustangs roll past UTPB, 6-1

ODESSA, Texas – No. 2-ranked Midwestern State won its eighth consecutive dual match and improved to 14-1 this season with a 6-1 victory over UT Permian Basin at Ratliff Stadium Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs have won their first three conference duals and defeated the Falcons for the 13th consecutive time. UTPB is 5-3 overall this season and 1-1 in conference play.

No. 4-ranked Jessica Binzari clinched the victory for MSU with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Brooke Runyan at No. 1 singles. Binzari is 10-2 this season with an 8-1 mark in the No. 1 position for the Mustangs.

Sydney Williams earned her sixth straight singles victory. Williams is 7-2 this season after defeating Dinethya Dharmaratne at No. 6 singles.

Williams and Sarah Mazaraki clinched the doubles point for Midwestern State as they celebrated their sixth consecutive victory. The red-hot duo dispatched Fanny Bergstrom and Sophia Rashid, 6-4.

The No. 35-ranked pairing of Hannah Yip and Camila Garcia breezed to a 6-1 victory over Tuva Asplund Teodora Vrucan to give the Mustangs an early lead in doubles. Yip and Garcia have won their last four doubles matches.

No. 15-ranked Sofia Giraldo posted another convincing victory at No. 4 singles. The sophomore from Colombia was the first singles player off the court for the second straight day, outhitting Fanny Bergstrom, 6-2, 6-2. Giraldo has won four in a row and is 3-0 in the No. 4 position.

Yip earned a straight-set win over Rhea Singh at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (3), and the senior from Malaysia has won seven of her last nine singles matches.

Anda Ghinga was tested at No. 3 singles but outlasted Vrucan in a marathon match, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 10-8. Ghinga extended her winning streak to five matches and is 11-2 this season.

Paige Bott earned the only point for the Falcons with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Camila Garcia at No. 5 singles. Garcia, a freshman from Colombia, played her first three-set match for the Mustangs.

Bott and Runyan combined to upend No. 13-ranked Ghinga and Binzari in doubles, 7-5.

Midwestern State hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday. First serve at MSU Tennis Center is scheduled for noon.
