LUBBOCK, Texas -- – Senior
Sydney Williams rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Maya Adler at No. 5 singles and clinched a seventh consecutive victory for No. 2-ranked Midwestern State at Lubbock Christian on Friday afternoon. The Mustangs earned a 4-3 victory at Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
Midwestern State is 13-1 overall this season with a 2-0 record in the Lone Star Conference after defeating the No. 20-ranked Lady Chaps.
Williams and
Sarah Mazaraki clinched the doubles point for Midwestern State with a 7-5 victory over Mariia Koroleva and Oshini Herath at the No. 3 position.
Hannah Yip and
Camila Garcia were also victorious in doubles with a 6-3 triumph against Anastasia Opolska and AnaMaria Zoric as the Mustangs established the early lead.
No. 15-ranked
Sofia Giraldo wasted little time increasing the Mustangs advantage as she cruised past Axelle Jacquemin at No. 4 singles in less than an hour, 6-3, 6-1. Giraldo has posted three consecutive victories, and the sophomore from Colombia improved her record to 8-5 this season.
Lubbock Christian narrowed the deficit with a victory at No. 6 singles as Zoric defeated
Alessia Dolce, 6-2, 6-3. Dolce, a freshman from Italy, suffered her first defeat of the season in four starts for MSU.
Andrea De Bernardo was able to pull the Lady Chaps even with the Mustangs by edging Yip at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5. Yip, a senior left-hander from Malaysia, saw a three-match winning streak come to an end and fell to 6-3 in the No. 2 spot.
Midwestern State reclaimed the lead as senior
Anda Ghinga won her fourth straight match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Maria Koroleva at No. 3 singles. The All-American posted her 60th career singles victory at Midwestern State. The veteran has only lost 21 singles matches while donning the maroon and gold over four seasons. This season, Ghinga is 10-2 overall in singles and 2-0 when playing in the No. 3 position.
Williams celebrated her fifth straight win for the Mustangs and improved to 6-2 for the season. The senior from Austin, Texas, was pushed into a decisive third set for the first time this season and improved to 2-0 at No. 5 singles. Williams has won 18 of her last 23 singles matches for the Mustangs.
Williams and Mazaraki have won their last five matches in doubles and improved to 9-2 in the No. 3 position. Yip and Garcia have a three-match winning streak in doubles and have won four of their last five appearances at No. 2 doubles after defeating Opolska and Zoric.
Opolska, who played No. 6 singles against Midwestern State last spring, completed an upset of fourth-ranked
Jessica Binzari at No. 1 singles after the Mustangs had already clinched the dual-match victory. Opolska prevailed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, as Binzari's seven-match winning streak came to an end. The senior lefty is 9-2 this season and suffered her first loss in eight starts at No. 1 singles.
Binzari and Ghinga, the No. 13 doubles pairing in the nation, were upended at No. 1 doubles by Jacquemin and De Bernardo, 6-0. The Romanian duo fell to 8-4 and has dropped both starts at No. 1 doubles.
Midwestern State visits UT Permian Basin for a dual match at Ratliff Stadium Tennis Courts in Odessa, Texas, on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
