Game Recap: Softball | | Trey Reed / MSU Athletic Communications

Ayala stays hot, but Mustangs split in Alpine

ALPINE, Texas -- Midwestern State split a Lone Star Conference twin bill with Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field.

The Mustangs claimed a 12-3 run-rule win in five innings in Game 1, then SRSU rallied to take the nightcap, 2-1.

Midwestern State moved to 9-20 on the season and 6-14 in LSC play, while Lobos went to 6-23 overall and 3-17 in league play.

MSU returns to action with a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian Friday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitches are set for 2 and 4 p.m.

GAME 1 | Midwestern State 12, Sul Ross State 3 (5 innings)

Junior Megan Ayala belted her third homer of the season and drove in a career-high five runs to lead Midwestern State to a 12-3, run-rule win in five innings during Game 1.

The Mustangs plated three runs in the first, a single run in the second, and two more in the third before erupting six in the fourth frame to put away Sul Ross State.

Sophomore Kayleigh Bowers limited the Lobos to one earned run on six hits over five innings to improve to 3-4 in the circle.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Megan Ayala belted a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to stake Midwestern State to an early lead.

The Mustangs added an unearned run in the second before Emma Roach stroked a two-run double to the left-field gap to chase in two more unearned tallies in the third to extend the lead to 6-3.

Ayala keyed MSU's six-run fourth by chasing in two more runs on a single up the middle, while Camile Nunez and Addison Lindemann also delivered RBI-singles in the frame for the Mustangs.

Sophomore Samantha Bustos paced SRSU's six-hit attack by going 2-for-2, while junior Leanza Chambers (1-12) took the loss in the circle, allowing nine earned runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings.

GAME NOTES

» Ayala delivered her team-best fifth multiple-RBI game of the season, while matching Myranda Jimenez for the most runs driven in a single game this season with five.
» Ayala raised her season batting average to .329 and took over the team lead with 19 RBIs.
» The win was the Mustangs' first by run-rule this season and first since beating Texas A&M International 8-0 in six innings on April 26, 2024.
» Senior Emma Roach extended her hitting streak to four games with her two-run double in the third inning. It was her third multiple-RBI performance of the season.
» Sophomore Kayleigh Bowers won her second consecutive start, allowing one earned run on six hits over five innings to improve to 3-4 on the season.

GAME 2 | Sul Ross State 2, Midwestern State 1

Sul Ross State's Alyvia Quintana took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and struck out a season-high five batters to lead the Lobos to a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

Quintana improved to 2-7 on the season and didn't surrender a hit until Midwestern State's Myranda Jimenez lead off the seventh inning with her second home run of the season.

MSU sophomore Addison Lindemann limited Sul Ross State to a pair of unearned runs on three hits over six innings, but fell to 4-9 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sul Ross State freshman Alexandra Ramos drew a one-out walk in the third inning, moved to second on an ill-advised double steal attempt when she sailed right through to second base.

Fellow freshman teammate Jenna Leanos was called out on a rundown while attempting to score from third, but Ramos eventually scored on a fielding error on Tori Owens' grounder to second for the first run of the game.

Ramos also drove in the Lobos' second run of the game with an RBI-single to left to plate Leanos, who had reached on error with one out in the fifth inning.

SRSU starter Alyvia Quintana retired the first 13 batters she faced and saw the minimum through the first six innings before her no-hitter and shutout were broken up by Midwestern State's Myranda Jimenez, who drilled her second homer of the season over the left-field fence to lead off the seventh inning.

The Mustangs put the tying run in scoring position after Camile Nunez reached on an infield single to shortstop and Megan Ayala drew a two-out walk.

But Quintana induced Emma Roach to ground out to shortstop to end the game.

GAME NOTES

» Senior Myranda Jimenez extended her hitting streak to four games with her second homer of the season in the seventh inning.
» Senior Camile Nunez extended her hitting streak to six games with an infield single in the seventh inning.
» SRSU's Alyvia Quintana won her second game of the season in the circle and first since allowing one earned run on seven hits in a 4-3 victory over Texas Woman's on February 14, 2025.
» MSU sophomore Addison Lindemann limited the opposition to six hits and did not allow an earned run in 13 innings in the circle in starts against UT Permian Basin and Sul Ross State this week.
