Midwestern State sweeps Falcons in doubleheader

ODESSA, Texas -- Midwestern State swept its Lone Star Conference doubleheader against UT Permian Basin by taking Game 1, 6-1, and Game 2 by a score of 1-0 Thursday afternoon at the UTPB Softball Field.

The Mustangs improved to 7-19 on the season and 4-13 league play, while UTPB slipped to 6-22 and 1-17.

Midwestern State closes its weekend road trip Saturday afternoon against Sul Ross State. First pitches in Alpine are set for 12 and 2 p.m.

GAME 1 | Midwestern State 6, Texas-Permian Basin 1

Midwestern State Mustangs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 6-1 win over UT Permian Basin in Thursday's opener.

Sophomore Kayleigh Bowers (2-4) got the win for the Mustangs. The right-hander pitched a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits, with four walks and striking out three.

At the plate, the Mustangs were led by junior Megan Ayala, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore Sydney Linn compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 3-for-4. Senior Camile Nunez also contributed for Midwestern State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mustangs got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Midwestern State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Ayala.

The Mustangs then held the Falcons scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. Midwestern State picked up a run on Ayala's two-out solo home run off of junior Meghan Gattis, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Mustangs.

Midwestern State held UT Permian Basin without a run before building their lead to 6-0 through four innings. The Mustangs scored twice, with one run coming across on Nunez's single. UT Permian Basin broke up Bowers' shutout bid by plating a run in the fifth inning.

ODESSA, Texas --Sophomore Addison Lindemann was dealing on Thursday, throwing a three-hit shutout to lead the Midwestern State Mustangs past UT Permian Basin, 1-0.

Lindemann (4-8) went the distance for Midwestern State, giving up three hits, walking four and striking out three for her second collegiate shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mustangs took the lead for good in the third, scoring for the first and only time in the inning. Midwestern State got on the board thanks to senior Camile Nunez's RBI double with one out.
