ALPINE, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Zarria Carter dropped in a game-high 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Mustangs past Sul Ross State, 88-70, Thursday night at the Pete Gallego Center.
MSU won its second consecutive road game and has won seven of its last nine games to level its season record at 11-11, while moving to 9-7 in Lone Star Conference play. The Lobos dropped their 16th consecutive game to fall to 2-17 and 1-15.
Freshman guard
Carisa Cortez connected on three 3-pointers and scored 13 of her 16 points to help the Mustangs double-up Sul Ross State, 26-13, in the second period to take control of the game.
The Lubbock native finished the game with four triples while going 5-of-10 from the field. She also dished out a team-high seven assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Midwestern State continued to pull away and led by as many as 29 points while Carter converted a layup to give the Mustangs an 81-52 lead with 7:01 remaining in the third period.
Sophomore guard
Emillia Steele added 14 points and seven rebounds, while freshman
Kerbie Cash chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.
Midwestern also enjoyed solid performances by junior
Alyssa Hutterer (eight points) and freshman
Trinidi King, who scored six points and grabbed nine rebounds in 21 minutes off of the bench.< br="">
Cheyanne Bonilla buried five 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 19 points, while Victoria Aguayo threatened a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists.
Midwestern State closes out the road trip Saturday afternoon at Western New Mexico. Tipoff at Drag's Court in Silver City is set for 2 p.m. (Central).
