SILVER CITY, NM -- Midwestern State took a 41-38 lead into the fourth quarter, but suffered a 52-50 loss at Western New Mexico Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs (11-12, 9-8) had two players score in double figures. Emillia Steele scored 15 points, and Kerbie Cash finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Calyssa Sevier added four points and five steals.
Sevier had five of the Mustangs' 13 offensive rebounds, but MSU on scored five second chance points.
Midwestern State forced 25 Western New Mexico turnovers that led to 21 points.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 8-6 advantage, Midwestern State went on a 6-0 run with 5:01 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Sevier, to increase its lead to 14-6. The Mustangs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-13 advantage. Midwestern State scored eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Midwestern State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 4:59 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Cash, to increase its lead to 26-17. The Mustangs enjoyed a 28-21 advantage at halftime.
After intermission, Midwestern State held on to its advantage and owned a 41-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. MSU scored 12 of its 13 third-quarter points in the paint.
Western New Mexico then erased the Midwestern State lead in the game's final quarter for a 52-50 comeback victory.
