Mustangs hope to continue winning ways on lengthy road trip

ALPINE, Texas -- Midwestern State visits Sul Ross State for the first time on Thursday night with a chance to improve its overall record to .500 and improve to 9-7 in the Lone Star Conference as it continues its pursuit of an LSC Postseason Tournament berth. Tipoff at Gallego Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The Mustangs improved their overall record to 10-11 with a 69-67 victory over West Texas A&M to wrap up a 3-1 homestand on Saturday afternoon.

Zarria Carter scored 12 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, and Kerbie Cash finished with 22 points for the Mustangs. Calyssa Sevier, who played 40 minutes, finished with a season-high 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range.

Cash was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 25.5 points and eight rebounds in the two games last week. The 6-2 freshman poured in a career-high 29 points on 7-of-26 shooting while going 14-of-17 from the charity stripe in a 70-69 loss to Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, completing her eighth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.

Carter leads the conference in scoring (20.5 ppg), rebounding (11.5 rpg) and steals (2.4 spg). She has the second-best field goal percentage (54.2%). Carter is 168-of-310 from the field, and no one in the conference has converted more field goals or put up more shots than the 6-1 senior from Mansfield, Texas.

Carter is the fifth-leading rebounder in the country and the 10th-leading scorer. Carter leads the league with 14 double-doubles this season, and only two players in NCAA Division II have more double-doubles. Emily Chmiel of East Stroudsburg and Alisha Little of Colorado State-Pueblo each have 16 double-doubles.

Carter is 95-of-133 (71.4%). from the free-throw line. She has made the second-most free throws and has the most attempts in the LSC. She has the 10th-best free-throw percentage in the conference.

Cash, a 6-2 freshman from Wylie, Texas, is the ninth-leading rebounder in the LSC with 7.4 boards per game, and she is the 12th leading scorer in the league with 12.9 points per game. In conference games, she averages 14.8 points and 8.4 rebounds.

Cash has also been productive at the free-throw line, hitting 80-of-109 (73.4%). She has the fourth-most made free throws in the LSC and the third-most attempts. Her free-throw percentage is ninth in the league.

The Mustangs have the most free-throw attempts per game in the conference with 21.6 and are shooting 69.3 percent (314-of-453) from the free-throw line as a team. The Mustangs have the second-most made free throws in the LSC with 15 per game.

Midwestern State is second in the league with 42 rebounds per game, which is 24th in the nation, and MSU is grabbing 14.8 offensive rebounds per game, which is third in the conference and 27th among NCAA Division II programs.

The Mustangs are scoring 62.8 points per game and holding their opponents to 63.2 points per game.

Carisa Cortez is dishing out 2.9 assists per game, which is 10th in the conference.

Midwestern State is forcing the fourth-most turnovers in the conference at 18.3 per game, and the Stangs are third in the league with 10.5 steals per game.

Carter leads the LSC with 51 total steals. Calyssa Sevier is eighth in the conference with 35 steals. Emillia Steele is 15th in the league with 32 steals and Cash is 17th with 31 steals.

The Mustangs are holding opponents to 38.7 percent shooting from the field, which is eighth-best in the LSC. Opponents are only shooting 26.6 percent from 3-point range, which is the third-best 3-point percentage defense in the LSC.

Midwestern State is blocking 2.4 shots per game, and Carter is averaging 0.9 blocks per game, which is eighth in the league.

Midwestern State is 4-0 all-time against Sul Ross State, including an 80-60 victory in their first ever conference clash at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last month. Carter scored a career-high 37 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in the victory. Cash had 10 points,10 rebounds, six assists and six steals for the Mustangs. Alyssa Hutterer came off the bench and scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and she hit 3 of 6 from 3-point range in the victory.

Sul Ross State enters the game with a 2-16 overall record and a 1-14 mark in the LSC. The Lobos are 2-7 at home this season but are currently mired in a 15-game losing streak.

Cheyanne Bonilla scored 23 points, and Victoria Aguayo finished with 21 points for Sul Ross State in an 83-74 loss at UT Permian Basin on Saturday. Bonilla also had five assists and six steals as the Lobos force 19 turnovers and scored 23 points off those miscues by the Falcons.

The Lobos are scoring 59.7 points per game and their opponents are putting up a league-high 78.9 points per game.

Melody Martinez is the leading scorer for SRSU with 11.7 points per game, while Bonilla is pitching in 11.2, and TaMaiya Tims is adding 10.9 points per game. Bonilla leads the team with 3.6 assists per game.

Aguayo is grabbing 5.7 rebounds and Mims is pulling down 4.5 boards per game to lead the Lobos, who are only managing to grab 29.4 rebounds per game as a team. The minus-15.1 rebounding margin is the worst in the league.

Sul Ross State is shooting 35.5 percent from the field, which is 15th in the conference, and its opponents are shooting 46.3 percent from the field, which is the weakest field-goal percentage defense in the LSC.

Opponents are hitting 34.5 percent of their 3-point attempts, which is the highest-percentage among LSC schools, while the Lobos are 13th in the league, shooting 26.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Sophia Bustillo, who is 16-of-51 from 3-point range, and Martinez (23-of-74) are the two best 3-point shooing members of the team for the Lobos.

Midwestern State continues its road trip on Saturday as it visits Western New Mexico. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST.
