Mustangs host Texas Woman's in Friday doubleheader

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State returns to Mustangs Park this week and hosts Texas Woman's on Friday before No. 1-ranked UT Tyler visits on Sunday afternoon. Both doubleheaders begin at 1 p.m.

The Mustangs are 4-13 overall with a 1-7 conference record. Midwestern State is 3-5 at home this season.

Midwestern State won its last game at Mustangs Park, defeating St. Edward's, 11-6, as Myranda Jimenez was 3-for-4 with five RBIs. The Mustangs return home following an 0-4 road trip, swept by Oklahoma Christian and Cameron.

The Mustangs are coming off an 11-6 loss at Cameron on Monday night. MSU outhit the Aggies, 12-9, and third baseman Megan Ayala was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Stangs. Addison Lindemann was 3-for-4 with an RBI as MSU took a 6-2 lead in the fourth inning before Cameron rallied for the victory.

Jessika Roberts, Sydney Linn and Madison Stewart all hit doubles. Jimenez was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI for the Mustangs.

Senior shortstop Camile Nunez hit .333 during the road trip and has at least one hit in 12 of her 15 games this season. Nunez is hitting .362 for the season and is tied with Jaycee Yezak for the team lead in RBIs with eight. Nunez has hit two doubles, a triple and a home run among her 17 hits for the Mustangs.

Linn is the leading hitter for the Mustangs with a .435 batting average and has five RBIs with three doubles this season. Linn played left field in the nightcap at Cameron and robbed Haley Gardella of a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

Linn has at least one hit in 12 of her 16 games with six multi-hit games for the Mustangs. Linn was 9-for-14 (.643) on the last four-game homestand with three multi-hit games against St. Mary's and St. Edward's.

Ayala has pushed her batting average up to .361 with two doubles, a triple and seven RBIs. Ayala has a five-game hitting streak and is 8-for-13 (.615) during the streak.

Midwestern State is third in the conference with 28 stolen bases. Linn, Roberts and Lily Warren have all swiped seven bases, and the Mustangs have only been caught stealing eight times.

In the circle, Lindemann and Kayleigh Bowers have each started six games, and Zoe Isom has made four starts for the Mustangs, who have a team ERA of 6.11 and opponents are hitting .357 against MSU pitching.

Lindemann has thrown 34 innings and has a 2-5 record with a 6.38 ERA. The sophomore from Holliday, Texas, has allowed 51 hits with 24 walks and 25 strikeouts. Lindemann was the winning pitcher in the last home game for the Mustangs, working three innings of relief in the victory over St. Edward's.

Bowers has thrown 30 innings and is 1-3 with a 4.43 ERA. The sophomore from Phoenix has allowed 42 hits with 13 walks and 16 strikeouts. Bowers threw a complete game against Southwestern Oklahoma State at Mustangs Park on Feb. 9 and was the winning pitcher in a 5-2 triumph.

TEXAS WOMAN'S

Midwestern State is 36-28 all-time against TWU and won a three-game series with the Pioneers at Mustangs Park in 2023. Last season, TWU took 2-of-3 games in Denton. The Pioneers are 9-14 all-time when visiting Midwestern State.

TWU enters the series with a 9-3 record overall, and the Pioneers are 5-3 in conference play after earning splits against No. 5 Angelo State and No. 23 Lubbock Christian last week at Dianne Baker Field in Denton, Texas.

First baseman Lizzie Smith is the leading hitter for the Pioneers with a .467 batting average, and she leads the team with a .628 on-base percentage. She has nine RBIs and has scored 10 runs for the Pioneers.

Hawwa Townsend has 11 RBIs for the Pioneers and is hitting .361 with a team-leading three home runs and four doubles. Townsend is slugging .722.

Marissa Espinoza is the leading base stealer for the Pioneers and has been successful on 5-of-6 attempts. TWU is 15-of-21 as a team on stolen base attempts.

The Pioneers are hitting .309 as a team and have outscored opponents, 64-47. Opponents are hitting .260 against TWU pitching this season.

Allison Gonzalez has thrown 32 1/3 innings, allowing 25 hits with 20 strikeouts and five walks issued. Gonzalez is 4-2 with a 1.73 ERA in nine appearances, including five starts. She has thrown three complete games for the Pioneers.

Randi Crawford is 4-0 with a 2.02 ERA over 27 2/3 innings. Crawford has a team-leading 29 strikeouts and has issued nine walks. Opponents are hitting .210 against Crawford.

UT TYLER

Midwestern State is 1-11 in its all-time meetings with the Patriots, who have won their last 10 encounters with the Mustangs. The Patriots swept a three-game series at Mustangs Park last season and outscored MSU, 42-5, over the three games. UT Tyler is 6-1 all-time when visiting the Mustangs.

The No. 1-ranked team in the nation enters the week with a 16-1 record overall and is 7-1 in the LSC after suffering a 3-2 loss to Angelo State in its last outing. The Patriots are 6-0 on the road this season.

UT Tyler visits West Texas A&M for a doubleheader before arriving in Wichita Falls to face the Mustangs.

The Patriots have the second-best team batting average in the conference at .366 and have hit the fourth-most home runs with 17 this season.

UT Tyler is scoring more than eight runs a game and is the ninth-highest scoring team in the country.

The Patriots' pitching staff has the third-lowest ERA among NCAA Division II programs and leads the conference with a team ERA of 1.01.

Primrose Aholelei is 8-0 with a 0.92 ERA and has only allowed 31 hits over 53 innings in the circle for the Patriots, and she is third in the LSC with 65 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .162 against the senior from Honolulu, who has thrown three shutouts and six complete games for the Patriots.

JT Smith is hitting .551 (27-of-49) and has scored 29 runs for the Patriots. Smith has eight extra-base hits with five triples, two doubles and a home run.

Bailey Krolczyk leads the Patriots with four home runs and 24 RBIs. She is hitting .446 with six doubles and a triple.

Taryn Barney and Jordyn De Los Santos have each hit three homers for the Patriots. Sam Schott is second on the team with 22 RBIs and is hitting .444 with four doubles, four triples and one home run.

UT Tyler is 26-of-27 on stolen base attempts with Smith boasting a team-leading six steals. Krolczyk and Ka'Lyn Watson each have five stolen bases.

Midwestern State travels to South Texas next week for doubleheaders against Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
