Midwestern State wins first leg of home-and-home with LCU, 67-56

WICHITA FALLS, TX -- Midwestern State rolled to its eighth straight win and its 11th win in 12 outings, using its stifling defense to beat Lubbock Christian at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night, 67-56, in the first game of a home-and-home set to close out the regular season. 

The Mustangs (22-5, 17-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Mason Gibson, who had 15 points. Bakari LaStrap tacked on 12 points from the bench, and Will Shepherd chipped in with 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

The Midwestern State offense was very productive from downtown, pouring in eight threes on 21 attempts. Gibson was the most prolific shooter for the Mustangs, draining three treys in the contest.

Midwestern State's defense held Lubbock Christian to only 37.7 percent shooting from the field, including 24 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After falling behind 17-15, Midwestern State went on a 6-0 run with 6:18 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Matija Svetozarevic, to take a 21-17 lead. The Mustangs then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 25-24.

After intermission, Midwestern State managed to gain control and had a 56-52 lead before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Pierre Sanders' layup, to extend the lead to 63-52 with 54 seconds to go in the contest. The Mustangs held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 67-56 win. Midwestern State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 11 of its 43 total points.
