Curtain falls on MSU season after loss to WNMU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (8-19, 6-14) fell to Western New Mexico (22-6, 15-5 Lone Star) 88-74 on Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Midwestern State led by four points at halftime, but Western New Mexico surged in the second half to secure the victory.

The game began with Western New Mexico taking an early lead through two free throws by Cortaviaus Seales, but the Mustangs quickly responded with a three-pointer from Charles Fofanah. The teams traded leads frequently in the first half, with WNMU gaining an advantage through second-chance points, tallying 13 in the half. MSU capitalized on fast breaks, scoring 8 points in transition, and Terrance Ramirez contributed significantly with timely assists, helping the Mustangs close the half with a 38-34 lead.

Western New Mexico surged in the second half. Andre Harris led the charge with consistent scoring, including a layup at the 4:26 mark to extend the lead. Seales contributed significantly with multiple layups and a crucial steal at 16:20. The Mustangs struggled to keep pace despite efforts from Ramirez, who scored a series of baskets early in the half, and a late three-pointer from Fofanah. WNMUcapitalized on turnovers and fast breaks, ultimately outscoring the Maroon & Gold by 18 points in the half.

Jordan Reed, Jonathan Jackson, Charles Fofanah, Vojin Mastilovic and Charles McClennahan were recognized during Senior Day ceremonies prior to tipoff.

Western New Mexico is the No. 4 seed in the upcoming LSC Postseason Tournament, but Midwestern State did not qualify for the eight-team, single-elimination tournament, which will be held March 5-8 at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.
