Lubbock Christian snaps Mustangs winning streak in season finale

MSU to face West Texas A&M in LSC quarterfinals

LUBBOCK, Texas -- No. 17-ranked Lubbock Christian dominated the glass and buried 12 3-pointers to roll to a 74-57 win over Midwestern State in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Rip Griffin Center.

The loss snapped the Mustangs' winning streak at eight games as MSU finished the regular season with a 22-6 overall record, while claiming the No. 3 seed at next week's Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament with a 17-5 record in league play.

Midwestern State faces No. 6-seeded West Texas A&M in the quarterfinal round Friday afternoon at Comerica Center in Allen. Tipoff is set for noon.

Lubbock Christian, which secured the No. 2 seed with a 23-7 mark and 18-4 record in LSC play, take on Eastern New Mexico in the quarterfinal round Friday at 2:30 p.m.

The Chaps used an 18-3 run over an eight-minute stretch of the first half, pushing their lead to 24-10 when Aaron Gonzales connected on a triple at the 8:46 mark of the half.

Lubbock Christian connected on 11 triples in the first half, including four from sophomore Ethan Duncan, three by senior Ty Caswell, and two more from Gonzales. The Chaps led by as many as 20 points before halftime.

Midwestern State managed a 9-2 run to pull within 50-36 after Bakari LaStrap hit one-of-two free throws with 15:07 to play, but that is as close as the Mustangs would get.

LCU out-rebounded the Mustangs by 18 boards and finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the field.

Duncan led Lubbock Christian by scoring 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting with five 3-pointers, while Caswell chipped in 13 point and grabbed six rebounds.

LaStrap was the lone MSU scorer in doubles figures, finishing with 10 points, while Mason Gibson and Jonathan Jackson had nine points each.
