KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Texas A&M-Kingsville dominated the fourth period on the way to a 72-56 win over Midwestern State Thursday night at Steinke Center.
The Javelinas (16-10, 12-8 LSC) outscored MSU 26-9 in the final quarter, gaining momentum when the Mustangs were whistled for flopping technical foul.
The call ignited a 10-1 run, allowing the Hoggies to extended their lead to 56-49 when Kaycee Groves buried a 3-pointer with 5:22 to play.
After
Zarria Carter hit a layup, the Javelinas rattled off another 11-0 run to to push the lead to 16 points with 1:09 to play.
The loss sent the Mustangs to 12-14 on the season and to 10-10 in Lone Star Conference play.
MSU is in ninth place in the LSC, but is one game behind West Texas A&M and UT Permian Basin. The Lady Buffs and Falcons are tied for the seventh with the final berths in the LSC Postseason Tournament berth with two games to play.
The Mustangs close the regular season with a game at Texas A&M International on Saturday before coming home to play Lubbock Christian Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Midwestern State jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first period, utilizing a 10-0 run spearheaded by 3-pointers by
Calyssa Sevier and
Carisa Cortez, then scored the final six points of the opening stanza to take 24-11 lead.
The Mustangs extended the lead back to 11 in the third period before Texas A&M-Kingsville reeled off 11 consecutive points to level game, but did not take a lead until the fourth quarter.
Carter led the Mustangs with 18 points, six rebounds, and four steals, while
Kerbie Cash added 13 points, and
Carisa Cortez chipped in 11.
Groves paced the Javelinas with 16 points and nine rebounds, while junior Shelby Ray had 15 points and seven rebounds.
