WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Zarria Carter and
Kerbie Cash combined for 50 points to allow the Mustangs to withstand an historic effort by Angelo State's Keniah Williams to take an 80-76 win Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Williams, a 6-4 junior from Georgetown, Texas, set a Lone Star Conference record by blocking 15 shots in just 19 minutes on floor which included seven in the first period and six in the third.
Her 15 blocked shots were the most in any NCAA division this season and the most in D2 since St. Paul's LaKisha Phifer set the division blocks record with 20 against Virginia Union on January 23, 1996.
But MSU overcame the blocking assault by chasing down 28 offensive rebounds and led for all but five minutes of the game.
Carter logged her 15th double-double of the season by finishing with 29 points on 10-of-25 shooting, while going 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. The Mansfield native snagged eight of her team-high 11 rebounds on the offensive end of the floor, while making four steals.
Cash, a freshman from Wylie, Texas, scored 15 of her 21 points in the first half, and added five rebounds and three steals in 24 minutes.
Freshman
Calyssa Sevier, who buried three clutch 3-pointers in the four period, finished with 11 points, while fellow frosh
Trinidi King played a big role on the glass finishing with a near double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.
Junior
Catalina Cortez hit a 3-pointer, but made a bigger impact directing the offense. She dished out a team-best six assists and grabbed five rebounds and didn't commit a turnover in 24 minutes while making her first start since the second game of the season.
The Mustangs took a 47-31 lead into halftime, but Angelo State used a 10-2 run late in the game to take a 76-75 lead when Madeline Stephens completed a tradition three-point play with 1:12 to go.
But MSU went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe and made three stops over the final 72 seconds to come away with the victory.
Stephens paced the Rambelles with 24 points and seven rebounds, while Madi Lumsden chipped in 16 points but ASU lost its fourth straight game to fall to 16-9 on the season and 12-7 in LSC play.
Meanwhile, MSU improved to 12-13 and kept postseason hopes alive by improving to 10-9 in league play.
The Mustangs hit the road to face Texas A&M-Kingsville Thursday night at Steinke Center. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
