CONROE, Texas --An outstanding offensive output was not enough for Midwestern State on Friday. The Mustangs plated eight runs, but could not hold the Missouri Western Griffons at bay, and were bested 13-8.
Sophomore Kayleigh Bowers (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Midwestern State (0-2).
At the plate, the Mustangs were led by sophomore Sydney Linn, who went 2-for-3 on the day with two RBI. Freshman Jaycee Yezak put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Emma Roach also helped out for Midwestern State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mustangs were trailing 6-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Midwestern State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Linn.
The Mustangs kept the Griffons off the board before narrowing the gap further in the fourth. Midwestern State plated two runs off of Missouri Western State pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Yezak, which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Griffons.
Missouri Western State expanded their lead to 10-5 before the Midwestern State offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 10-8 in the fifth. The Mustangs scored three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of Roach. The Mustangs were unable to get any closer, as Missouri Western State added three runs to their tally on the way to a 13-8 final.
