WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State opened conference with a 65-58 victory over Angelo State, snapping a three-game losing streak, and hosts UT Permian Basin at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Friday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Midwestern State (3-4, 0-1) took a 14-point lead over the Rambelles in the second quarter and scored 26 points off 28 turnovers in its victory on Wednesday night.
Macie Upshaw had five steals, while
Kerbie Cash and
Ta'Leeyah Glynn each had four. Cash scored 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Glynn finished with 16 points for the Mustangs, who hit 22-of-27 free throws.
Cash is the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 15 points per game, and she leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game. Cash is the sixth-leading rebounder in the Lone Star Conference and is fifth in the league with three offensive rebounds per game.
Glynn is scoring nearly 9.4 points per game for the Mustangs, while sophomore guard
Carisa Cortez is scoring 7.4 points per game.
Senior guard
Veonce Powell, who is scoring 6.0 points per game, leads the team with 1.6 assists per game.
Midwestern State is holding opponents to 62.4 points per game but only scoring 59.2 points per game, and the Mustangs are struggling from the field with a field goal percentage of 30.6. MSU is only converting 24 percent of its shots from 3-point range.
Upshaw is pulling down 6.2 rebounds per game, and scoring four points per contest. Upshaw is fifth in the conference with 1.8 blocks per game.
The Mustangs are third in the LSC with 12.4 steals per game, and they are forcing the second-most turnovers in the conference with 23 per game. MSU has the second-best turnover margin in the LSC at plus-5.2.
UT Permian Basin (3-4, 0-1) is coming off back-to-back losses to Adams State and Lubbock Christian. Kenadi Rising played the full 40 minutes at Lubbock Christian on Wednesday night and finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons.
UTPB outrebounded Lubbock Christian, 42-33, and scored 15 second-chance points against the Lady Chaps.
Rising is the leading scorer for the Falcons with 10.3 points per game, and the senior from Rapid City, South Dakota, is grabbing six rebounds a game.
Jasmin Holt is dishing out 1.6 assists per game, and Jonesha Neal is averaging 1.4 assists per contest. Holt and Ja'Nya Thomas are both responsible for 1.6 steals per game.
The defensive-minded Falcons are holding opponents to 58.7 points per game while scoring 54.7 points per contest.
UT Permian Basin boasts the second-best 3-point percentage defense in the league as opponents are only hitting 26.6 percent of their shots from beyond the arc.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 12-9, but has lost five of the last six meetings with the Falcons, including a 73-70 setback at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season. The Mustangs are 7-4 when hosting UT Permian Basin.
