Conference campaign commences as Rambelles visit Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State opens conference play on Wednesday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum as Angelo State visits the Mustangs. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Midwestern State (1-3) has a three-game losing streak following a 59-38 loss to East Central on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs are coping with injuries.

Junior forward Aniya Williams and junior guard Da'Lonna Choice, who were both in the starting lineup at the beginning of the season, suffered injuries in the second game of the season at Central Oklahoma.

Caelyn Williams, a 5-11 freshman forward that started the game at UCO and played a season-high 18 minutes against Southeastern Oklahoma in a 97-59 loss, did not play against East Central. Katy Greathouse, a 5-11 junior guard, left the game against the Tigers on Saturday with an injury.

Sophomore forward Kerbie Cash is the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 12.3 points per game, and she leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game. Cash is the eighth-leading rebounder in the Lone Star Conference and is fourth in the league with three offensive rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Carisa Cortez and junior guard Ta'Leeyah Glynn are both scoring nearly eight points per game for the Mustangs, while senior guard Veonce Powell is scoring 6.5 points per game.

Powell leads the team with 1.8 assists per game, while Cash, Greathouse and senior guard Catalina Cortez are all averaging one assist per outing.

Midwestern State is holding opponents to 63.5 points per game but only scoring 57.8 points per game, and the Mustangs are struggling from the field with a field goal percentage of 30.3. MSU is only converting 22.8 percent of its shots from 3-point range.

Upshaw and Williams are pulling down 6.3 rebounds per game, and they are both scoring four points per contest. Upshaw is fifth in the conference with 1.75 blocks per game.

The Mustangs are third in the LSC with 11.5 steals per game and are forcing the second-most turnovers in the conference with 21.75 per game. MSU has the third-best turnover margin in the LSC at plus-4.

Angelo State (1-4) has a three-game losing streak following a 66-46 loss at No. 2-ranked Pittsburg State, but Keniah Williams, a 6-4 senior center, posted her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Williams had a memorable performance at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season, setting the conference record with 15 blocks in just 19 minutes on the floor, but Calyssa Sevier hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and Midwestern State defeated the Rambelles, 80-76.

Williams leads the conference and is fifth in the nation among NCAA Division II players with 3.4 blocks per game this season. She had a season-high six blocks in a 62-61 loss to Fort Lewis, which is the only home game the Rambelles have played this season.

Williams is the fourth-leading rebounder in the LSC with 8.6 boards per game for Angelo State, which is third in the league with 40.4 rebounds per game, and the Rambelles lead the conference with 16 offensive rebounds per game.

The Rambelles are holding opponents to 36.9 percent shooting from the field, which is the fourth-best field goal percentage defense in the LSC.

Majik Esquivel is the leading scorer for the Rambelles with 10.4 points per game. The 5-8 sophomore guard from Lubbock, Texas, scored a season-high 23 points in a 61-51 victory at Regis, hitting 9-of-17 shots from the field, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Taylor Grona is scoring 10.2 points per game, and the 5-8 sophomore guard from Fredericksburg, Texas, scored double figures in each of the first four games but was held to seven points in the loss at Pittsburg State, where she played 40 minutes.

Williams is scoring 8.6 points per game and is shooting 47.2 percent from the field. Senior Landry Morrow, a 5-8 guard from Ackerly, Texas, is adding 7.2 points per game for the Rambelles.

Angelo State leads the all-time series with the Mustangs, 43-34, but Midwestern State won two of the last three meetings and is 24-15 when hosting the Rambelles.

Midwestern State is back in action on Friday afternoon as UT Permian Basin visits the Mustangs. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
