Mustangs play first conference road game at Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND, Okla. – Midwestern State visits Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon for its first conference road game. Tipoff at Payne Athletic Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Midwestern State (2-4, 1-1) opened conference play with a 65-58 victory over Angelo State but suffered a 68-45 loss to UT Permian Basin at D.L. Ligon Coliseum in its last outing.

The Mustangs are playing just their second road game of the season. Central Oklahoma defeated MSU in Edmond, 65-52, on Nov. 20.

Midwestern State is forcing 21.7 turnovers per game, including 12 steals per game and boasts a plus-4.5 turnover margin. 

Kerbie Cash and Macie Upshaw lead the Stangs in steals. Cash is third in the Lone Star Conference with 2.4 steals per game, and Upshaw is fourth in the league with 2.3 steals per game.

Upshaw is also fifth in the LSC with 10 total blocks and 1.7 per game. Midwestern State is third in the conference with 4.5 blocks per game. 

The Mustangs are also third in the conference with 14 offensive rebounds per game. Cash is the leading rebounder for MSU with seven boards per game, and she is grabbing nearly three offensive rebounds per contest.

Only Oklahoma Christian attempts more free throws per game among conference teams. Midwestern State is averaging 24.8 free throws per game, while the Eagles are taking nearly 27 free throws per game. The Eagles lead the league and are ninth among NCAA Division II programs with 17.9 made free throws per game.

Cash is the leading scorer for Midwestern State with 13.2 points per game. Ta'Leeyah Glynn is adding 10.3 points per game for the Mustangs, who are averaging 56.8 points per game as a team. Opponents are scoring 63.3 points per game against MSU.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Oklahoma Christian, 12-9, and won the last five meetings, including a 69-66 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season. The Mustangs won their last visit to Payne Athletic Center, 76-74, in the 2023-24 campaign.

Oklahoma Christian (4-5, 0-3) has a three-game losing streak but is 4-1 at home this season. The Eagles are coming off a 63-55 loss to Lubbock Christian on Thursday night.

Oklahoma Christian was within two points of the Lady Chaps with 1:48 remaining in the fourth quarter, but LCU closed out the game with an 8-2 run.  Taylor Jackson finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles, who shot 34 percent from the field and went just 2-for-11 from beyond the arc. OC outrebounded the Lady Chaps, 33-29.

Jackson is the leading scorer for the Eagles with 10.8 points per game, and she leads the team with 6.1 rebounds per game. Kenzie Willis is pitching in 10.4 points per contest. OC is outscoring the opposition this season 64.2-60.4.

Elikya Baseylia is pulling down 4.7 rebounds per game for the Eagles, who are outrebounding opponents this season, 38.2-32.0.

Oklahoma Christian has the second-best 3-point percentage defense in the LSC, holding opponents to 25.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc. 

Midwestern State is Puerto Rico bound for games on Dec. 18 and 19. The Mustangs face Rio Piedras and Sacred Heart (P.R.) in the Puerto Rico Clasico before returning to conference play at St. Mary's on Jan. 2.
