Four-time defending champions welcome Lubbock Christian to Stang Park for LSC Final

Mustangs seek sixth title in seven seasons

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State is making its seventh consecutive appearance in the Lone Star Conference Men's Soccer Championship final and seeks its fifth straight title as it hosts Lubbock Christian at Stang Park at noon on Saturday.

Top-seeded Midwestern State (13-3-3, 8-2) advanced with a 2-0 victory over UT Tyler as Cooper Tea and Cristopher Guevara scored 36 seconds apart in the second half. Goalkeeper Jake Morris made four saves for his sixth clean sheet of the season.

The Mustangs have shut out the opposition 10 times this season, and recorded seven clean sheets in their last nine matches. MSU is outscoring opponents this season, 37-15, and has the best goal differential in the LSC — 16th-best among NCAA Division II programs.

Midwestern State, which is ranked No. 8 in the nation and No. 5 in the region, leads the league in total points (107), total goals (37), total assists (33), shots per game (15.3), points per game (5.6), corner kicks per game (6.8), and assists per game (1.7).

The Mustangs have the second-best save percentage at .792, and they are fifth in shot accuracy, putting 39.2 of their shots on frame.

Parker Plaxco is second in the conference with 11 goals and 27 points this season. Alan Rivera is second on the team with five goals and 13 points.

Cooper Tea scored his fifth goal of the season in the semifinal match, and Liam Kervick has scored four goals. Four players have two goals apiece for the Mustangs.

Plaxco recorded his fifth assist of the season in the win over UT Tyler. Ethan Krchnak, Liam Pritchard and Jaime Villagomez all have four assists this season.

Morris leads the league with a goals-against average of 0.81, and he is 7-2-2. Daniel Robles is 6-1-1 with four shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.76.

Midwestern State is 5-3-1 at home this season and 5-0-2 when hosting Lubbock Christian at Stang Park.

The Mustangs are unbeaten in 15 meetings with the Chaparrals and have won the last four encounters, including a 2-0 victory at LCU Soccer & Track Complex on Oct. 29.

Liam Pritchard, the LSC Midfielder of the Year, scored his second goal of the season against the Chaparrals in the 33rd minute, and Kervick put the game out of reach with his fourth goal of the season in the 83rd minute. Morris made six saves to preserve the shutout, and the Mustangs outshot LCU 18-13.

Midwestern State improved to 11-0-4 in the all-time series.

The Mustangs hosted LCU in the LSC Men's Soccer Championship final in 2021. The two sides played a scoreless draw for 110 minutes, and the outcome was decided on PKs. Midwestern State prevailed 5-4 to earn the automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship.

Midwestern State has earned 11 straight berths in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship and seeks its 20th all-time appearance this year.

Lubbock Christian (8-7-4, 5-3-3) opened the postseason with a 2-1 victory over visiting West Texas A&M in the quarterfinals of the LSC Men's Soccer Championship.

Augusto Militao scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute, and the Chaparrals celebrated their first postseason victory since defeating West Texas A&M in the semifinals of the LSC Men's Soccer Championship, 3-0, at Stang Park in 2021.

Lubbock Christian, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, traveled to St. Edward's for its semifinal match on Wednesday and left Austin, Texas, with a 1-0 victory and a berth in the LSC Men's Soccer Championship final for the second time in the history of the program.

Geoffroy Letienne, the LSC Defensive Player of the Year, converted a penalty kick in the 26th minute, and Connor Pettigrew made three saves for his seventh clean sheet of the season. 

Pettigrew, the LSC Academic Player of the Year, boasts the best save percentage in the conference at .802 and has the second-best goals-against average in the LSC at 0.89. Pettigrew has logged 1,710 minutes in 19 matches for the Chaparrals, which leads the league and is third-most among NCAA Division II goalkeepers.

Senior midfielder Francisco Horta leads Lubbock Christian with five goals and 12 points, including two game-winning goals for the Chaparrals, who were 4-3-2 in away matches this season.

Junior midfielder Manu Nunez is second in the conference with five assists this season, including one in the quarterfinal victory over West Texas A&M.

The Chaparrals have outscored their opponents, 21-17, and have the second-best goal differential in the LSC. 

The 40-team field for the 2025 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship will be revealed Monday at 6 p.m. The first round of the tournament kicks off on Nov. 21. The semifinals and finals will be played at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Dec. 12 and 14.
