WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Senior forward
Jose Ortiz was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals in a 5-0 win over Cal State East Bay in the season opener at UTD Soccer Complex in Richardson, Texas.
Ortiz took seven shots in 28 minutes of action, and all seven shots were on frame. Ortiz scored his first goal for the Maroon & Gold in the 42nd minute, assisted by
Tanner Tea and
Davis Mays. The Mustangs had a 1-0 halftime lead over the Pioneers, but Ortiz extended the lead in the 51st minute, assisted by
Eduardo Cerna.
Ortiz earned the hat trick when he got the rebound off of his own penalty kick and rifled a shot past East Bay goalkeeper Adan Corona.
Just 11 seconds later, the transfer from SMU tied the school record for goals and points in a game when he scored from 30 yards out in the 62nd minute.
Ortiz's final two goals set a school record for fastest back-to-back goals. The feat also ranks fourth in NCAA Division II history.
