ALPINE, Texas — Midwestern State University (6-1-4, 6-0-2) secured a decisive 5-0 victory against Sul Ross State University (1-10-0, 0-7-0) on Saturday, with the Mustangs taking 35 shots and recording a shutout.
Midwestern State began the match assertively, with
Sloane Sullivan's early shot being saved by Sul Ross State goalkeeper Kathy Palmer at 3:46. In the 16th minute,
Nyxalee Munoz broke the deadlock with a goal assisted by
Marlene Myrvold, giving the Maroon & Gold a 1-0 lead. MSU doubled their advantage just two minutes later when
Jimena Rodriguez scored, assisted by Sullivan, making it 2-0. Despite a few attempts from the Lobos, including a shot by Maria Barrientos saved by
Tanner Sorenson, the Mustangs maintained their lead into halftime.
Midwestern State extended their lead early in the second half with a goal from Myrvold in the 52nd minute, assisted by
Morgan Countryman, bringing the score to 3-0.
Mable Pruter further secured the Mustangs' advantage with a goal in the 69th minute. Continuing their offensive,
Abbey Lee scored in the 75th minute, assisted by
Taryn Sueltz, making the score 5-0. Sul Ross struggled to penetrate MSU's defense, with
Lauren Short making multiple saves in the secon half, including stopping shots by Barrientos and Riley Stallings. The Mustangs' decisive performance in the second half clinched their victory.
Myrvold contributed significantly to Midwestern State's performance with one goal and one assist. Munoz secured the victory with the game-winning goal. Lee efficiently converted her single shot into a goal, making an impact with two points. Sorenson earned the victory in net, making one save, playing 45 minutes.
The next challenge for the Mustangs comes as they travel to Sigma Beta Chi Field to face off against St. Mary's on October 15. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
