SAN ANTONIO — Midwestern State (6-1-5, 6-0-3) and St. Mary's ( 5-5-2, 4-4-1) ended in a 2-2 draw on Wednesday at Sigma Beta Chi Field. Midwestern State fired 19 shots with eight on target, while St. Mary's managed 11 attempts, with five on goal. This result extends Midwestern State's impressive unbeaten streak to 10 games.
Midwestern State started the match with an aggressive offensive push, earning three corner kicks within the first eight minutes.
Nyxalee Munoz was active early, taking three shots, with one saved by St. Mary's goalkeeper Haley Faucette.
In the 25th minute,
Marlene Myrvold opened the scoring for Midwestern State assisted by
Sloane Sullivan, giving them a 1-0 lead. Myrvold, who has been in fine form with seven points in the last four games, has also scored in three of those matches.
St. Mary's responded five minutes later when Shelby Paniagua equalized with a goal, assisted by Elena Kossler, bringing the score to 1-1. The period ended with
Tanner Sorenson saving a shot from Paniagua in the 44th minute, maintaining the tie.
Midwestern State took the lead in the 56th minute with a goal by
Lillia Besedin, assisted by
Mable Pruter. Besedin notched their fourth goal of the season, scoring twice in the last three matches. St. Mary's responded with an equalizer in the 75th minute, as Kossler found the back of the net to level the score at 2-2.
MSU's
Madison Brinkley and Myrvold each had shots on goal, but St. Mary's goalkeeper Faucette made crucial saves to keep the score tied.
As time expired, both teams had chances, with shots from
Alinessa Salinas hitting the bottom center and
Morgan Countryman striking the top woodwork, but neither could break the deadlock, resulting in a draw.
Looking ahead, MSU will host Angelo State at Stang Park on October 18. The game is set for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
